The AFL's expansion into Sydney's rugby league and soccer heartland has hit a financial bump, with the league forced to tip in an extra $3.25 million into the Greater Western Sydney Giants last year.

Documents obtained from the Australian Securities and Investments Commission show the Giants slid to an operating loss of $529,315 in 2014 despite the AFL pouring in $20.16 million in grants for the year.

More alarmingly for the AFL was the revelation that the Giants suffered a large fall in marketing and sponsorship income as well as a drop in membership and merchandise revenue in a year when they increased their number of wins from one to six.

Giants' chief executive David Matthews said there had been mitigating circumstances, including sponsor Skoda having a heavily back-ended contract in 2013.

He said membership had risen but the lodged figures also took into account attendances. He also said the balance sheet was "strong".

"We are under no illusion that the connection between membership and ticketing sales correlates heavily with on-field success," Matthews said on Monday.

"That's a current weakness we have got. It's a weakness in two respects that we are trying to address. One is that we are start up club in a very, very competitive market and one where we are trying to promote the AFL as an entertainment. You add to that modest on-field success ... it just shows how important our on-field trajectory is going to be to the financial trajectory."

The grant figure was an increase of $2 million from 2013, when the AFL provided $18.16 million to the Giants, who then recorded a small operating profit of $30,836.

The Giants' 2014 financials also revealed the AFL provided the club with a $1.25 million interest-free loan for their training base, payable within four years. The Giants had not made any payments on the loan by the time the accounts were ruled off on October 31, 2014.

Marketing and sponsorship in 2014 fell almost $1.4 million to $7.8 million, while membership and merchandise was down more than $300,000 to $1.14 million.

Total revenue for the western Sydney team reached $32.4 million, up from just under $32 million in 2013. Football expenses were up slightly from $20.1 million in 2013 to $20.8 million. Administration expenses increased almost $400,000 to $2.86 million, while venue expenses were up more than $200,000 to $1.61 million.

AFL really thought they could just put a team in Western Sydney and all the rugby league fans would follow AFL instead of NRL with Izzy playing for them.

How wrong they were. Western Sydney is completely different to Melbourne and Adelaide.

Exactly mate, AFL is not a working class game in Sydney like in Southern States.

Is all wealthy Eastern Suburbs types or well off ex pats from Melbourne and Adelaide.

The AFL culture would be so alien to people out there.

Even an NFL team would have more support there.

the derps n fumbles is a game for all classes & socio economic groupings in the Sthn States
there is no divide

RL is also the Nthn states game of the masses
the game for the real people of the NSW .... QLD & the ACT
it has people of all levels follow & love it

BUT
there are people in Sydney who believe RL is beneath them & will never follow it ever because of its history

well
that & they are snoody up themselves GPS & private school educated wankers who you wouldn't piss on if they were on fire

Exactly, the Union and AFL crowd are definitely a similar mould of people in Sydney.
Stuck up and soft as butter.

every RL club in western sydney is being bailed out by leagues clubs just to break even. GWS is doing no worse than any of them on that front

you've got basketcases like the tigers who have 2 regions of fans across the city to appeal to yet are barely scratching 7k members

infact the only club based in that region out of the 4 major codes that is even getting close to being in the black without any assistance from secondary funding like that are wsw

Facts are facts though, Western Sydney is just not buying the AFL bullshit propaganda. Is a very white Aussie game in the centre of a very multicutural part of Sydney.

Islanders out there will never get into AFL. Is too soft.

they said from the very start it would be a long term plan with minimal success for a decade or so. They were correct

Greater Western Sydney Giants will take the field in an expanded AFL in the new year, but what are the ramifications for local football rivals? Although Sydney Swans star Adam Goodes publicly welcomed "little brother" GWS into the family, how does this change the sporting landscape for the area's 2 million residents?

The AFL will start the New Year on the back of a record-breaking $1.25 billion TV deal, which will see every AFL match shown live on Foxtel as well as select matches free-to-air on Channel Seven. The Giants are the spearhead of the AFL's expansion into rugby league heartland – a $200 million investment that chief executive Andrew Demetriou has said is a long-term vision for the game. According to the AFL, its support for the expansion franchise is "not for two years, or five years, or 10 years.
We've based our plans on 20 years, 30 years and beyond

but they have more members than any club in the state, higher avg attendance than any club in the state, higher revenue than any club in the state...etc

but hey it's fine...who needs nrl clubs in the black, full stadiums, high memberships when we've got the tigers and st george who are the cream of the crop when it comes to success

yeah those poor swans averaging the biggest crowds and most members for any sydney sporting team year after year after year. The Storm could only dream of beating one Melbourne AFL team let alone all of them
