A club that is only 10 years old is worth as much as one of the NRL's foundation clubs

BRW Rich List member Harry Stamoulis and car parking magnate Robert Belteky have sold 35 per cent of A-League soccer club Melbourne Victory in a deal that makes it one of the most valuable sports clubs in Australia.

The pair sold their stake to existing board members and directors, led by chairman Anthony Di Pietro and Mario Biasin, in a deal that values the Victory at just less than $20 million.

The transaction, announced on Wednesday afternoon, means Mr Stamoulis and Mr Belteky have abandoned a public sale of their 4.5 million shares in the club.

The duo, head of Stamoulis Property Group and managing director of Care Park respectively, had sought between $2 and $2.50 a share in the public offer, which was being promoted by Deloitte and split into several small and large tranches to potential buyers.

Mr Belteky said in early November that more than 500 people had expressed interest in buying shares.

The deal with existing board members and shareholders is at about the $1.50 a share mark, which would mean the two sellers have reaped about $6.75 million combined in the sale.

The deal puts the Victory’s value at close to $20 million, which is significantly higher than the $11.5 million that Football Federation Australia reaped from selling Asian Champions League champions Western Sydney Wanderers to a consortium led by rich lister Paul Lederer earlier this year.

It is also more than the $12 million paid by English Premier League giants Manchester City for Melbourne Heart (now named Melbourne City) in January.

James Packer’s purchase of a 37.5 per cent South Sydney Rabbitohs stake in a $12.5 million deal last month, including equity and debt, valued the Rabbitohs at about $20 million.

South Sydney’s fellow NRL club Brisbane Broncos, which is listed on the Australian Stock Exchange, has a market capitalisation of about $25 million.

The Victory is the A-League’s biggest club in financial terms and made a profit of $934,000 from revenue of $16.2 million in 2013-14.

In a statement, the Victory said the sale “enhanced financial stability . . . and avoids any ongoing uncertainty about the share register or governance arrangements at the club”.

Mr Stamoulis has been a director of the Victory since 2010 but could step down from the board after the transaction is completed.

Mr Di Pietro is managing director of Premier Fruits Group, which turns over more than $200 million annually, while Mr Biasin is the chief executive of property group Metricon.

The Victory, which has won three of its five games this year, is second on the ladder after Perth Glory.
