Question on Styles

As I have said I don't know a lot about AFL so I guess this is a question for me to learn, in football we have a host of different styles of play, from the actual set up 433, 442, and variations on those such as 4231, 4141, to what we saw the Dutch play at the World Cup with 3 at the back.

This is the coupled with defence, sitting back playing on the counter, to tika-take ball possession to parking the bus etc. my team is accused of playing boring football by others, I prefer to call it effective lol.

Rugbey league is pretty limited in styles, my question is to the AFL guys, are there different set ups? Different styles etc or do you just pretty much mark up man on man then play a different style

Thanks

Definitely, there was a recent article interviewing Rodney ease, new Gold Coast coach, and he says there is a lot more than just going out there and playing football. There's a lot about structures, and each person has a job to do with the team. There is probably a lot to it all. Even when I played at local level there were plays. My sons team has plays or structures. You do get running down the clock at an end of a game, where they kick it back and keep possession. Also flooding came in years ago. Very rarely do you see players playing to the positions as they traditionally were. You also get coaches playing a 7 man back line and sometimes you'll get coaches who try to isolate a forward on his opponent if opponent deemed weaker. Pagan's paddock was also another strategy. There's also the press, where each line pushes up to lock a ball in the forward line. Some coaches like Malthouse play the wings whereas some like Geelong like to go up the middle and break the lines. There are many many types of plays and you will often see this best at kick out. The huddle comes to mind. Hope that helps a little.

yea, thats great, thanks for that information, I assumed their might be, as it is played over such a large area. Interesting that the AFL has a press, something that the Wanderers do very well, thank you Fred, very informative

RL tactics 101 : bite down on your mouthguard, put your head down and run straight at the opposition for 80 minutes

ultimate battle of the boofheads

I think there are plays in rl and Union... When you see those dummy passes and goals scored with a quick succession of passes, that's rl at its best I reckon.

i played RL at a higher level than anyone on this forum

the same plays you see at the top level are things you learn playing junior footy

double pumps
wrap around combinations
inside outside balls
attacking the short side off scrums and quick play the balls

these are things people learn at U-11's. by the age of 15 you should already have these things down pat in theory

the only difference is that the nrl are professional athletes and the execution is a lot better and more refined. rugby leagues ceiling when it comes to tactics stops right there. nrl players can barely put a sentence together - and there is a reason for that! there is little to learn in the game after your teenage years!

the only tactical advancement that has been made in rugby league in the last 20 years is wrestling in tackles to slow the play and full one out sets from dummy half, taking advantage of lazy markers that also helps keep momentum for your team going and to give the forwards a breather. rugby league requires next to no thinking  just get in there son! get stuck in and do the badge proud lad!

rugby union is much more of a 'thinking mans game' than league is.

Fred, that wasn't really what I was looking at in regards to styles, every sport have combination plays, individual moves etc, classic example is NFL, which teams have hundreds of plays, fakes etc.

My question was on set up and styles, wanderers set up 4-2-3-1.. Four at the back (goalies are not included they are assumed lol) 2 holding mid fields - 3 attacking midfielders (1 in centre the true CAM) and 2 out wide, and a striker.

As a country we have a national curriculum in football in which we want from under 8's to opens following a 4-3-3 model (the 4-2-3-1 I mentioned earlier is a variation on that) but within that structure their are a number of style of play.

Wanderers are defensive orientated, when they lose the ball they transition very quickly (the quickness was what won it for them in the first season, how quickly the moved from attack into defense then into attack, so the Wanderers when they lose the ball fall back to the half way line very compact, closing the space for attack, whilst the the striker and the attacking midfielders press (harass) looking to turn the ball over.

When the opposition lose the ball in our defensive half the players very quickly move forward, traditionally we looked to play out wide and use the speed then bring it back in.

Other teams look not to loose the ball, tika-taka, Barcelona type of play, move the ball quickly around, sharp accurate passes looking for the opening but only attacking only committing when they looked to score, ball possession was gold.

Wanderers could win a game but lose the possession stats 60-40, Roar and now Adelaide would need to win possession stats to win the game.

That is simply two styles that are probably easiest to explain

So how can you claim you played at a higher level.
That is outright bullshit.
You have no idea what other posters have or do in their sporting life.

Ahhhhhh, try to keep up dumbo .
I know it's hard.

Sokka boy wanted posters on here to get on snapchat(& was laughed at by RL posters)
He wanted to compare pics & show what a great male specimen he was(or words to that effect).

I think he wants to pick up ,but this is not a dating site.

So that is the snapchat reference & seeing as you fumblers have your tongues firmly wedged up the sokka boys dung holes I thought you would jump at the chance to get on snapchat.
Might do you some good to take a break from the pretend world you live in . :))) :)))

So I have NFI where you get spying & trolling from..( maybe your therapist can help you make some common sense posts .

Good luck to him.
