Southern Football League grand final abandoned after brawl between players and supporters
A football grand final has been called off after a brawl broke out between players and supporters in Melbourne's south-east.
Police were called to the Ross Street Reserve in Heatherton about 3.30pm on Saturday, where Mount Waverley was taking on Carrum Patterson Lakes in the Southern Football League division-three seniors grand final.
A police spokeswoman said supporters started heckling one of the teams as it left the ground at half-time. "A fight broke out between the players and the supporters, involving up to 20 people," she said.
One person was taken to hospital with minor injuries sustained in the brawl and the game was called off when one of the teams refused to return to the field, the spokeswoman said.
Fairfax Media has been told the free-for-all started when three Mount Waverley supporters began abusing Carrum Patterson Lakes players as they left the field.
A spectator, who asked not to be named, said one player was "king-hit" from behind and that some supporters forced their way into the club's change rooms where the stoush continued.
Police have not laid charges and are continuing to investigate.
Carrum Patterson Lakes president Steve Barnes declined to comment on the incident.
The Mount Waverley Football Club has been approached for comment.
In a statement released on Saturday night, the league said it was investigating the brawl and would "consider the appropriate course of action with regards to the abandonment of today's match."
It is the second violent incident to mar the local football finals session, after a trainer was attacked and hospitalised during the Northern Football League grand final last weekend.

A police officer suffered head injuries after a Sunday afternoon rugby league match in North Ipswich turned into a violent street brawl.
The incident began just before 5.00pm along The Terrace, which borders North Ipswich Park.
Two police officers were arresting a man when they were approached by a group of about 100 people.
The officers called for urgent back-up, before one was punched in the face.
Twelve police crews, consisting of at least 20 officers armed with capsicum spray and tasers, raced to the scene to regain control.
So far 15 people have been arrested, with police keeping a close eye on the area's local pubs and clubs into Sunday evening.
The injured officer was taken to St Andrew's Private Hospital for treatment.

not to condone violence, in any way, but after a year of a number of violent incidents, Newcastle nights player russell packer, gets what he deserves 2 years jail for hitting a bloke. prehaps this will send a message to many of the other NRL thugby heroes that like to hitting people. no other code in Australia has the violent culture like the NRL does with a large number of off field incidents occurring regularly to follow suit.
Hypocrite.
& in that thread you were shown up as the clueless ****** that we all have come to know .
Showing how dumb DUMBO is ,is easier than shooting fish in a barrel.

whats the point of posting an article about a brawl during an AR match when on the same weekend the same thing happened at a RL match
they're both disgraceful incidents and nothing to be proud about no matter what code
