Well there you have it. You need to be in peak condition to play AFL.
In the NRL on the other hand, you can get on the grog and get fat "because the physical demands are a lot lighter".
Karmichael Hunt reveals key difference between AFL and NRL cultures

CODE hopper Karmichael Hunt has provided a fascinating insight into what he could get away with off the field as an NRL player but couldn’t in the AFL.
The three-sport star is now headed to Super Rugby’s Queensland Reds after four years in the AFL with the Gold Coast Suns.
But his journey started in rugby league, with the Brisbane Broncos, where he says drinking was a bigger part of the culture than in the AFL.
“The demands of AFL footy mean you need to be in peak condition,” Hunt told Triple M’s Grill Team in Brisbane.
“For most of the year you need to be able to knock out 12km or 13km on the weekend.
“In terms of the culture of going out and enjoying yourself after every game, that does not happen
whereas in rugby league, because the physical demands are a lot lighter compared to AFL, you could find boys out enjoying themselves.
“I certainly did when I was younger because I knew that the next week it would not affect me.”
Hunt said the biggest issue he had in adapting from rugby league to AFL was the extra running.
At the Broncos, he weighed in at roughly 93kg. Hunt reached as much as 100kg as rugby player in France in 2009-10, while that weight dropped down to 87kg as an AFL player.
“It wasn’t that I couldn’t play the game,” Hunt said.
“Other than the running capacity and the ability to cover the ground like the boys obviously do so well in the AFL, I could play.”
The 27-year-old added that he was happy to be going back to a code, in rugby union, that better suited his physical make-up.
“I’m looking forward to the future. My body shape, genetics and all that will probably agree with me that I’m going back to a game that will better suit me.”

Karmichael certainly speaks the truth here. Look for yourself at the condition of NRL players. Fat bastards galore plodding around. Who ate all the pies... you fat bastards lol

There's nuttin new here folks. AFL players have to trot for extended periods and we should respect them for their superior trotting. Yes you need to be in good physical condition to trot it out for 12k each week and yes ur avg leaguie isn't conditioned in this way so will find it hard...your avg leaguie is conditioned for brute strength, power, speed and agility, they're mentally tuned to be aggressive and to show no fear nor pain. They are incredibly tough individuals and must be respected for this. Trottings kinda cool and hard to do for long periods but yeah, nuttin to go wow about. It's like what so most people prefer watching at the Olympics, the 10k trot or the 100metre sprint?

so from the article the NRL folk are piss heads
and AFL folk are finally tuned athletes that require speed, stamina and endurance & skill to be at the top of their game.
eg NRL players top of their game. move across to AFL for some extra money, but fail, only to be found out to slow, to unfit, to unskilled.
leave the game of AFL, folau signs up and plays union next thing you know he is staring for Australia. hunt has now decided to leave AFL to union
now what does that say about rugby in general compared to AFL

Meaning he was better than thousands and thousands of vfl, safl, wafl ntfl etc players who consider tha elves semi pro who have been playing and working their lil hearts out at trying to be good at marngrook all their lives

with... Wait for it... No experience whatsoever in the game
Quite amazing really
I did something similar at a lower level. Rocked up to my local marngrook club after playing soccer bball league and union, asked whether I could join and was gettin best on grounds in my first ever season

kinda showing up some teammates who'd played all their lives. They liked my work but I think there was some resentment there too
It was a fun sport to play and excel at and apart from the trotting it was nowhere near as physically demanding on the body as rl where often a drink after the game would help numb the physical pain you were in.

I think it points to the professionalism of AFL as oppossed to nrl. And probably the supporter base of the two with nrl your working class type of supporter .... Hence popularity in west Sydney.
I mean nrl still playing out of suburban grounds etc.

It's just facts and truth bro. Just facts and truth. To be honest I should credit my bball, soccer and rugby league skills as the primary reason I excelled at marngrook. But I can honestly say that comparatively, marngrook was the easiest code to do well in. It's wide open and you're often just one on one with your opponent with heaps of space to move. Really fun and if you can read the play and where the ball is headed you're a shoe in to excel

so which AFL club drafted you since you excelled and all

Wasn't serious enough to bother doing the training required. But clearly most nrl players have the skills and professionalism to make it into the AFL
