The Swans will almost certainly draw more to tonight’s match against Essendon than the combined total of tonight’s two NRL matches in Sydney, Manly v Brisbane at Brookvale and Canterbury v Penrith at ANZ Stadium.

With an interstate team (the Broncos) visiting Brookvale just over 13,000 are expected, while the Bulldogs (fourth) and Panthers (third) match is estimated to attract just under 20,000. That will leave their combined tally well short of the expected SCG crowd.
While crowds in Melbourne are falling the Swans’ numbers are surging. Last year’s average home game attendance was 28,296, this year it has increased by more than 4000 per game to 32,393. That figure is set to grow even further after the Essendon game and the possibility of the Swans hosting two home finals in Sydney in September.
Remember that time the Storm drew more people to a single game than 2 AFL games in Melbourne combined? Me either.

Has any match been played yet?

No.

So how the fuck would that mob know what crowds will turn up anywhere?

The S15 final is on as well, that will be taking plenty of people away from both RL and AFL this weekend as it's an event.

The Swans crowd could very well be bigger than the TV ratings in Sydney, you think that's good?

Yeah good on them for turning up to 11 games a year, if you follow AFL in Sydney, you have 11 games, no one is going to go to gws, they're shit.

Well there are NO general Admission tickets and only 3500
As of Tuesday afternoon, less than 3,500 tickets remain on sale, with General Admission and Silver ticket allocations already exhausted for the match.
I guess if they've already bought tickets it will be a safe bet it will be bigger than any NRL match in Sydney!

Fair point, we'll return to this discussion on Monday with the matter settled definitively one way or the other.

If you follow nRL in Melbourne you have 12 games to go to. Are the Storm going to outdraw two AFL games in Melbourne combined?

Give the Storm a while to grow some real roots first dopey, I'm quite happy with where the Storm are at.

As for the swans, bea knows all about their false crowds from the early 90's being reported way over what they got just like GWS atm, bea also knows that the swans will go back to that support if the AFL do not continue to prop them up against the rest of the comp.

Your beloved swines might get some good crowds now while they are winning, but remember what happens to them when they start losing.

The AFL can't prop them up forever.

How many GF's would you like the Storm to play in before they are expected to have a decent crowd? When can we expect them to get bigger crowds than Collingwood and Essendon?

It doesn't matter about how many gf wins anyone has, it's about a timeline, growing support in the younger generations that haven't grown up with the RL/AFL divide like it was years ago.

the swans have a 15 year head start in that regard.

All the storm can do is continue to play and do all it can to appeal to as many Victorians as they can just like the swans are still doing.

So let me get this straight - the Swans will go to pre success levels (early 90's) of crowds and members if they don't win - but the Storm will continue to increase in following even if unsuccessful????? Is that your argument Para??

the Swines will be watched by a quarter of the number of Sydneysiders who'll watch just one of the NRL games on TV :-k

total of Sydney peepers who'll watch the SWines tonight ( both at the ground & on TV )
about 80K ... maybe 90K at a stretch

total who'll watch the 2 NRL games tonight
650K

Sydney ratings will likely top out at about 80-90 odd - will be more than the NRL gets in total throughout the 5 states and territories outside of NSW and QLD for both friday night matches combined- and another 40k at the ground. its not a bad effort.
no :-k

whats not a bad effort is about 700K

which is what RL got for its biggest game in the sthn states this year
when your bumbling mess of a sport can match that .... or in fact even get within cooee of it
