Presidents label Sydney’s cost-of-living allowance an unfair advantage

WESTERN Bulldogs president Peter Gordon has launched a blistering attack on Sydney’s abuse of the cost-of-living allowance, accusing the Swans of bending the AFL’s rules.

The Swans’ “Bondi Billionaires” demolished Geelong on Thursday night, with Gordon one of a number of Melbourne club officials believing Sydney has an unfair advantage this year.

He said the Swans had abused the cost-of-living allowance, set to be watered down at the AFL’s equalisation meeting on Wednesday.

The Dogs president urged the AFL to have a long memory if the Lance Franklin deal eventually wrecked Sydney’s salary cap.

“I think we all recognise the cost-of-living allowance was completely unfair and with respect to (former president) Richard Colless it is almost farcical to see the way Sydney has used it over the last little while,’’ he said.

“You only need to look at last night’s game to see how well Sydney has exploited the cost-of-living allowance (COLA).

“I think they have tested the (AFL’s) rules, because I am not sure anyone would say they believe Buddy will be playing footy in a Sydney jumper in nine years. And if in eight years time if they come to the AFL and say we need relief because he’s won us a few flags and we are important for the competition but the guys who made the decision are long gone so help us, I hope the AFL has a long memory.”

Asked how to stop a rampant Sydney outfit, departing Carlton chief executive Greg Swann replied on SEN: “Give us all an (extra) million bucks and we might be a chance.”

Equalisation working group member Gordon was supported by another Melbourne president who said of Sydney’s dominant win: “You saw the COLA in action last night. And it was pretty scary”.

It is legally cheating to get the Swans to the GF, that is the only way the AFL can compete with SOO ratings, they need the Swans there to do it.

THE problem is not just that the AFL’s clubs are a pack of dirty rotten stinking cheats.

It’s that they are so determined not to admit it.

In the past two years the AFL has been rocked by scandals involving the league’s holy trinity of tanking, illegal drugs and salary cap.

The only thing we have lacked is a corrupt World Cup bid.


Yet Adelaide’s Stephen Trigg recently tried to explain away the Kurt Tippett scandal as a misunderstanding, while the Demons still try to defend the indefensible on tanking.

So what, you might say?

Surely no one would be stupid enough to repeat those fabulously stupid decisions again?

Today the AFL will unveil the most significant package of equalisation measures since the salary cap and draft were introduced nearly three decades ago.



It includes football department spending taxes, revenue taxes and funding packages which will enable every club to spend 100 per cent of the salary cap.

It is good for footy because it pushes the Any Given Sunday principle — any side can win on any given day.

But what it also means is the urge to bend or break the rules will never be greater.

When you spend exactly the same as every other mob, pay the same on coaching and sports science and recruit from exactly the same places, where is your competitive advantage?



In the past a power club like Hawthorn or Collingwood could rely on massive footy department spending, clever left-field recruiting (Lachie Keeffe, Jarrod Witts, Mason Cox) and the silly decisions of others to stay ahead of the pack.

Now even the battlers will be able to pay 100 per cent of the cap, can afford even the best coaches, and won’t be blown away by footy’s arms race.

The AFL steals must of its good stuff — rules, ideas, morals — from the NFL
