Traffic to official AFL websites and apps is growing at more than twice the rate this year as experienced across the 2013 season, with strong increases on mobile platforms in particular.
The AFL network’s aggregate traffic before the past weekend’s matches was up about 50 per cent compared with the corresponding period of the 2013 season. Last week the AFL network had more than 4.3 million unique visitors, a record number, while downloads of the AFL smartphone and tablet apps have reached 3.1 million, about 40 per cent more than in June last year.
AFL Media general manager Peter Campbell told The Australian Financial Review the league is averaging about 1 million unique viewers across the main game days of Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The AFL Media unit, which provides the content to the central AFL website and apps, now has more than 100 journalists, editors and producers working for it after being established in 2011, and broke even on the league’s $5 million initial investment in it last year.
Campbell would not reveal subscriber numbers for the AFL and Telstra’s digital broadcast package, where customers pay $89 to access all games online and via phones and tablets, but said view growth had been strong.
