ACT Sports Minister Andrew Barr claims crowd figures to Canberra's professional football codes have been inflated in previous years, leading to lower recorded numbers this year.
Officials from the Raiders and Brumbies are in agreement about the need for the proposed indoor stadium in Civic to go ahead to boost crowd numbers.
Attendances at the Brumbies and the Raiders at Canberra Stadium have come under the spotlight after the early part of the NRL and Super Rugby seasons.
Just 7129 fans watched the Brumbies beat the Auckland Blues 26-9 last Friday night in driving rain, the lowest crowd to a Canberra Stadium Super Rugby game since a tiny 4000 in 1999.
The Raiders attracted just 9636 fans against the Gold Coast Titans last month, however that was an increase of more than 1000 people on the corresponding fixture two years ago.

Adamj1300, it's criminal folly to compare membership levels between the two codes because the NRL have not fostered memberships as a part of the culture until recently. The AFL have always done it. So the comparison there is truly unfair.

However you are correct on the crowds. I firmly believe that the NRL should bite the bullet and stop transmitting games live against the gate on free to air, and get these couch potatoes off their rear ends and attending games. Of course the venues need work as well.

i know.. maybe if they look at the data/achievements for the giants over a whole season then compared it to the data/achievements taken from 3 or four rounds from the team that came 2nd in the 'smallest team in australia' award. will this make GWS loose their crown?

2nd smallest team in australia are the under 10s division 6 alice springs rockers netball team, they have been 2nd to gws for 2 years straight. so if we used data from 4 rounds from the rockers against GWS over the whole season will the rockers take the title as the smallest club in australia?

the rockers lost all games but in those 4 weeks, GWS won 2 games, the Ayres rockers had a total of 110 people per game watch them and GWS had an average of 6000 but only 1000 actually paid (wow GWS are so far winning!)

next community support (oh no GWS's archilles) the Rockers comfortable there

local interest (ohh shit its GWS's excecutor) the under 10 div 6 Rockers team generate alot of local interest from family, friends and the locals they hit the piss with after games at the pub. GWS were confident and claimed they had thousands but after 3 hours waiting at their training facility for locals to attend the open day no one showed up and GWS called it off saying they got the days wrong. next day 200 fans showed up to the training event but we soon found out that 195 arrived to get the free tv advertised on ebay by an unknown person, 4 people were actually looking for the aquatic centre and the last person was just the homeless vietnam vet who is known to sleep on the training field.

so the rockers still smashed GWS even when only using 4 weeks of the season and will stay the 2nd smallest team in australia, No one not even 10 year old alcoholics can take the title of the smallest club in australia off GWS
