Shit eh. 2 decades plus! Struth, I think the population of Sydney and melb 2 decades ago was nothing like it is today.
Expansion, hasn't the AFL done a wonderful job of it!

the MCG is unavailable, for starters
so its well noted that the NRL ratings and crowds are falling,
on the back of last year as well

well it expands the game, the over all crowd figure will suffer, going in to new areas and new markets, but the game will be better in the long run.
cant say much for the NRL, expansion

falling crowds and tv fallings. NRL going great

go read some state before commenting, what ever the case is its still double what the minnow Rugby league brings in, hence the low revenue of the NRL

The AFL were always going to have a low first round crowd aggregate which was factored in to a new longer season. Its the first time theyve:
- started the season in mid March
- started with a split round
- played a First round without a single game at the MCG
- played home games for the suns, giants and Hawks in Tasmania in the first round
- played a game against a major event like the Grand Prix in the same city
So despite a low aggregate, the crowds so far have been acceptable for Carlton and Collingwood, and very good for the Suns and the Giants.
Compare that to the NRL who have no real change in their starting date or availibility of venues. Theyve had the lowest total after 2 rounds in over a decade. Almost all of their crowds have been below par and a disappointment. If it was a single round it may be an anomaly like the AFL, but over two rounds its the start of another disappointing season.
After 2 rounds:
- Total attendance = 264,395, worst since 2004 (14 games)
- Average attendance = 16,525, worst since 2003

The figures may be down for the reasons given above previously it's actually good news because those "smaller" games did very well leaving the "bigger" games in reserve.

The AFLs ratings are up so you were wrong anyway.
So far the AFL crowds have been more than acceptable for the matches played. What this means is the future rounds will involve more games at the MCG and result in better crowds.

RD your pathetic response is ( and was) so predictable and premature...happy to compare numbers next week, week after and for eternity.
I would expect you to get predictably excited and premature, as I would expect you to be premature often...

Raiderdave what did u think of the over 19,000 that turned up to the suns game on the weekend.
What did the Titans get, something like 12,000 but on TV it looked more like 5,000. (Fudge Fudge)
Gold Coast are finally waking up & supporting just simply a better code - the mighty AFL. Now only if Western Sydney could do the same & get there act together in following Australia's game. Although I have heard the place is a hole so it does not suprise me that the feral thugby Leagu is king out there
