Gould has always been outspoken...he was very outspoken against News Ltd & Gallop..
He was speaking up to make sure that the new IRC was focussed on issues that had been neglected for 15 yrs.

I think gws will struggle however but Gold Coast is going gangbusters ... A proportion of ex pats, people who were born here and raised on afl, and converts. It's the converts that amaze me, not just with the suns, but the dads who are taking their sons to footy training (afl). Like union and league, there is a class divide between afl and rl, with rightly or wrongly, rl seen as a bit feral. Again, living here this is my observation only. I work in brissy, and no way is there the same vibe or grassroots support. Gold coasters have always been ambivalent about their sport so maybe that is why they are jumping on board thinking the suns are on the ump. Who knows. And no I don't live in a bubble, I work with a large team over different jobs, and visit lots of schools and other work places. I am of no illusions as to where afl sits but on Gold Coast the afl is very strong and the suns growth over three years is phenomenal.

It's probably true but past history suggests a link as past history suggests any sort of fudging such as including nz ratings. But those figures could be right. I leave it to x man to explain them properly or verify.

Rl still number two however ... But that shouldn't matter as to those who love it it is always number 1. Like for me, if afl was a minor sport I'd still enjoy it as much.

Wrong biggest threat to the AFL is Manufactures leaving Victoria and South Aussie in droves.

AFL will be on the decline in a phew years when Victoria and south Aussie go into recession.

I think that it is often in such times that sport thrives?

Geelong are going from strength to strength laying out money for new stands and lights to host night matches ... And they make a mint each home game.

AFL is growing in NSW and Queensland and is in no trouble in it's heartland.

But in participation soccer is still winning.

As for rugby union, it always goes into hard times when the Wallabies aren't winning.

Rl is outside these areas though.
