I wonder if being on the receiving end of racist taunts by a fan & an AFL club boss/radio/tv celeberity had any bearing on the judging.
There are far more deserving people out there than Sportsmen/women.

He's a worthy choice, a great ambassador for the indigenous and Australians overall.

Yes, a good choice too I feel. He does a lot of work for indigenous communities I hear.

i dont really know much about him, but he seems like a very honourable guy.
good on him, dunno why you have to turn this into an NRL vs AFL thing by saying "AFL player wins aussie of the year" cause it's kinda irrelevant which code in this case.

He didnt win because he is a sportsman. He won because of his actions as an indigenous Australian

I think your right re it is what he does off the field that he got the award. I guess for people who do not know him it helps to describe who he is by saying he plays AFL. Like Tim flannary being described as an environmentalist and whoever that cricketer who got it being introduced as the Australian test captain etc.

How do you think he compares to Fred Chaney who was awarded the Senior Australian Of The Year in relation to accomplishments over a lifetime for the indigenous population.
If your comparing the two I would have thought that Fred Chaney was more worthy of the Australian of the Year.

Maybe, these things are always fodder for debate as to who is or isn't worthy. Let's just celebrate that two good people with good causes were selected.

What gets me is this .
Good on him for pointing out a 13 yr old racist girl...No problem...Kid needs some education.
But why didn't he go full steam ahead on EDDIE.
He basically shut up shop when a supposedly educated high up AFL man said something racist..
I would have far more respect if he went hard ,but he didn't,
He should have called for Eddie to be suspended .
He had a perfect chance to do something about a problem & he didn't.

Bullshit. Chaney's work - although admirable - hasn't had the profound effect of Goodes.

Cant believe all the racist tripe that people are vomiting up on big footy..real sad.
Fair enough people question if his a worthy winner but i can remember such debate for when pat rafter won it or steve waugh and anyone else for that matter! Our Country still has a long way to go going by the attitudes on big footy and some on here!

Chaney restoring the sight of tens of thousands of indigenous Australians .... also thousands of others in the 3rd world making him a near God in this places
