Fantastic News.

Organisers of the NRL Auckland Nines have installed temporary seating to increase Eden Park's capacity after the event sold out.

More than 44,400 tickets have been sold for the two-day event on February 15 and 16, making the Nines the first non-All Black test match to sell out the venue since the 1992 Cricket World Cup semifinal between New Zealand and Pakistan.

Promoter David Higgins, of Duco Events, said the extra seats would go on sale on Tuesday at 9am.

"I'm pleased to confirm the Dick Smith Auckland NRL Nines has sold out," Mr Higgins said. "We've filled the stadium to 44,400 people per day, so we've just completed a deal with Eden Park to make available a further 1,600 temporary seats."

At $299 each, the final few seats won't be cheap. But their prime location and the nine hours of entertainment on offer each day meant they were fairly priced, Mr Higgins said.

That's great. I read nines could be the 20 20 of league. I think such innovations are fantastic and how good is it to see it being so popular in nz.

jesus

that'll be over 90,000 tickets sold......... & I dare say a fair portion of Eden parks 8,000 stadium members will turn up on both days too
so it will surpass 100,000 for the tournament.
far bigger then any Rugby 7's tournament in NZ apparently too

this is an astounding success
& I am really looking forward to it .. as it would seem Aucklanders are too

meanwhile what innovation has the fumbles & bumbles got in store for the 2014 pre season ?
Rl has had its All Stars
now the 9's

what can our singlet clad brigade have to look forward to ?

So 90k seats sold to a preseason comp? I wonder how that compares to the crowds for the AFLs preseason comp? Hmmmm, 30-40k for the GF alone. Add another 10-20k for each other match, you really want to go there? :?>

Whoopee do.

Whatever they make out of this stunt, the AFL will surpass that easily when the real stuff begins. The only positive for the NRL here is that it'll put a bit more money in their kick. God knows they need it because club matches alone won't pay their bills thanks to poor crowds!

the AFL make bucket loads more in every facet anyway. The preseason comp is merely a practice game warmup, and still gets crowds the NRL would wet themselves over. You really wanna go there?

I think the hybrid game is good for rl in nz going by crowds. One thing the nrl (or is it arl) does well

wow, surpassed even my expectations. I thought it would be amazing to JUST sell out before the tournament, but to do it with 3 weeks to spare and then get another 2k seats for $300 each get put in is great.

hope all the money goes into promoting the game across NZ and the tournament is a resounding success (as it should be).
