Penrith are negotiating with the Tasmanian government to play NRL games in Hobart.
According to News Corp Australia, it is believed the deal would be similar to AFL premiers Hawthorn for four home games in Launceston, but without the sponsorship component, and would include growing rugby league in Tasmania.
Tourism Minister Scott Bacon confirmed a meeting with the Panthers last Thursday, when Penrith representatives presented a proposal for one game in Tasmania each year from 2014-17.
“The Government has referred the proposal to Events Tasmania for an assessment against rigorous criteria around numbers and duration of stay by visitors and potential for broader community benefits,” Bacon said.
“The government is a strong supporter of events and has prioritised funding for events that occur in traditionally slower winter months and stimulate the local economy.
“We have to ensure that support for events provides a value for money investment
there was 4 League teams in Tassie
with 109 registed players
totally no interest for the NRL down there, but then again the NRL usually play in empty stadiums
it only goes to prove again the NRL is a shit show, a directionless ship, all the commission are doing are rearranging the deck chairs. old news ltd saw the light of day and jumped off nice and quick

I think it is a good move. Whilst too one disputes tassie is AFL heartland (maybe Dave lol) it is a way to promote the game there and build. I think if they played their cards right they could build a nice little niche market.
They could grow the game. In fairness to Adam I think a trial nfl game would draw 14 000 in tassie... Don't think it represents level of interest but like nfl people know of the code and if something is done regularly then penrith and nrl could do well. Good to see the nrl doing something right and I actually think this is a move that could grow the game if done right. Only problem will be nrl fans reluctance to travel.

IMO they will most probably get more than at their own home games so it's a good move most probably 20 yrs over due won't affect AF thou there is room for both - I just am interested long term what will be the interest Storm started with 20 k crowds in 97 now they average 14k once the novelty is gone the crowds invariably go down.

Hobart has had a small taste of NRL recently with great success.
In February 2012, North Hobart hosted a full strength practice game between the Melbourne Storm and the Brisbane Broncos that attracted about 14,000 spectators to Tasmania's spiritual home of Australian rules football. A successful negotiation with the Panthers would continue Hobart's mid-winter surge as a sporting tourism destination.
