The Penrith Panthers have emerged as the most valuable sporting brand in the country.

The research by Brand Finance and Landor Associates ranks the Panthers' worth at $46.2 million.

That's higher than any other sporting brand in the country including the highly respected AFL club Collingwood, which comes in at second on the list with a value of $39.1 million.

The news is a huge vote of confidence in Phil Gould, Warren Wilson and Penrith's new management team that has worked to bring the club back from the brink of collapse.

It is also a huge boost to the club's corporate sponsorship team who will most likely use the statistic to help further boost sponsorship opportunities.

Just one other NRL club was in the top 10 this year - the Bulldogs, who came in third with a value of $34.5 million.

The rest of the top 10 is filled with AFL clubs.

“Branding is important to sports teams because it validates their ability to generate value both on and off the field," said Richard Haigh, Brand Finance Australia, Director.

"This is particularly true amongst Aussie Rules brands which excite incredible brand loyalty but even they were pipped by the Penrith Panthers."

The Panthers Group businesses have closely associated the brand successfully with the elite team to create a strong business, which has resulted in the high valuation.

Commenting on the results Dominic Walsh, Landor Australia, Managing Director, said: “There’s no doubt that the AFL goes deeper in the Australian Psyche than NRL – this goes back to its unique Australian Heritage.”

Brand Finance, the world’s leading brand valuation consultancy, advises strongly branded organisations on maximising their brand value through effective management of their brands and intangible assets. Founded in 1996, Brand Finance has performed thousands of branded business, brand and intangible asset valuations worth trillions of dollars.

For the Panthers, the number one ranking gives the club a huge advantage in a market crowded by bigger clubs and rival codes.

Well I don't know about what Phil Gould says - I checked their website and whatever report Gould was referring to I couldn't find - seems strange that a club that owes 42 mil, regularly gets home crowds of 6-8k and has one of the lowest memberships has a higher value to the market than a club making multi mill profits each year 80k members and a home average in the 50k. Also if they were so valuable why did they struggle to find a sponsor??? - This must be taken tong in cheek considering the reporting paper is a Penrith local paper.

So if this thread is to be believed the AFL have 9 of the top 11 clubs in Australia, and one of the only NRL clubs in the top 11 is the lowly Panthers.... :thumbleft:

And you think this paints the NRL in a good light?

arnt the broncos ment to be the most wealthy NRL club

Panthers
All going to plan, the Panthers could become one of the stronger clubs in the NRL within a few years. The balance sheet of the football club has high debts but also a large asset base. Under Phil Gould's leadership the football club managed to lift revenue by about $1.7 million from 2011 to 2012. This meant the leagues club assistance was $4.7 million in 2012. The club is predicting this will fall to $3 million in 2013, still some way from washing its own face.
For the moment though, the football team still depends on the financial support of its owner, the Penrith Leagues Club. The Panthers should be on par with the mighty Bulldogs Leagues Club, however a spending spree more than a decade ago, financed by debt, has threatened the group's existence.
Under the leadership of group chief executive Warren Wilson, who has been in the job just under two years, debt has dropped from more than $90 million to just over $42 million. Interest cover has gone from barely one times cover to eight times cover, with the interest bill slashed and debt refinanced with ANZ. Leagues club profits have also been increased, which bodes well for the future. The Panthers are on the way back.

Panthers Entertainment. Well, ParraEels, you just provided the reason why "Panthers" is a big brand name. And it's NOT because of the fricking NRL club!!

Snip off the outer skin and you'll find that the NRL club is nowhere near the "Brand" that Collingwood is!!

Poorly researched article.

I think if you read the articles on this it attributes penriths poker money as the main factor. Only collingwood got a tripple A rating

the pokie money ie the way to go.
the 2 bigger clubs in the AFL rely heavily on pokie money as well, both the Hawks & pies are the pokies kings of the AFL and over a quarter of their overall football budget comes from the ownership of the poker machines and gaming venues

Interesting article. Suggests that Collingwood has to be worth at least 150 million dollars, if it was solid as a public company.

I think pies police money was about 19 mil. The difference between pies and panthers was that panthers main source of income was their pokies whereas pies made as much from
Merchandise hence pies only one that hit a triple a rating.

Fanciful article from the RL press in Sydney. As you say, the club has massive financial problems and crowds and membership numbers smaller than soccer. A good laugh though. Bit like when some RL journo suggested Canterbury Bulldogs would soon be bigger than Collingwood. :(/ :(/ :(/
