Adam Goodes has been named the 2013 NSW Australian of the Year
Adam Goodes’ inspirational off-field work was recognised on Monday night, with the Sydney Swans champion taking out the 2013 NSW Australian of the Year Award.

The dual Brownlow Medallist was recognised for his work funding and co-chairing the Go Foundation, which exists to enable a brighter future for Indigenous people through employment, education and promoting a healthy lifestyle.

Goodes’ much-admired stance against racism, which came to the fore this season when a spectator racially abused the star player in the Swans’ round nine clash with Collingwood, was also highlighted on the night along with his efforts working with troubled youth, including those in detention centres.

Despite being unable to attend Monday night’s ceremony at Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art, Goodes shared his pride for receiving the award in a pre-recorded acceptance message.

“I'm really honoured to be able to represent NSW, just being recognised for doing what I do is always nice,” he said.

Goodes, who will enter his 16th AFL season at the Swans in 2014, said he hoped the Go Foundation would be able to provide Indigenous youth with the same platform for success that the has Sydney Swans provided him.

“That's the thing we want to be able to provide indigenous kids: provide the opportunity we had," he said.

“That's the success right there."

Goodes shared his excitement via Twitter last night, and thanked Go Foundation co-founder Michael O’Loughlin for accepting the award on his behalf.

he's a good guy i hear. only swans player i know of. and 1 of 3 i know of in AFL. Buddy, this ablet bloke and goodes. likely he deserves it. Btw is this NSW australian of the year or Australian of the year? whats the diff.

Oh actually, does Barry Hall still play? i remember that bald fellow.

I think each state picks someone - and from them that are picked the Fed Gov will pick an Australian of the year, Barry Hall retired 2 yrs ago - has a media career on Fox does about 4 shows during footy season.

I only know Cam Smith, Billy Slater, Cooper Cronk and Cherry Evens (don't ask me what positions wouldn't know). The last one because he has a strange 1st name for a man. I would most prob know more than most in Melb - even down here only the 3 stars are really known.

congrads to the man. really showed good character with how he handled the racism issues he was dragged into earlier this year. A good leader for the indigenous and non indigenous Aussies out there.

I believe all six states and both territories make the nominations, and then the Australian of the Year is decided on.

Unfortunately RD was a miracle birth - 1st person to be born without a brain!

Dave's heard of him. If he hasn't then it's positive evidence he lives in the basement and doesn't go to any newspaper websites at all.

And yet your not capable of rational thought no matter how well you spell! Obviously like most with cognitive impairment you have difficulty on focusing on the subject matter and your attention gets drawn to the words rather than the subject. Poor ol RD life must be difficult that this forum gives him his only sense of achievement!
