I saw this little snippet today at the State Library of Victoria while doing some stat research, and I thought of you guys - especially the assertion that football is all about endurance and nothing else. Yes it is an old article but it's just as applicable now as it was then.
DENIS COMPTON LIKES OUR FOOTBALL
The Sun (Melbourne)
Page 30, September 30, 1946
"Australian Rules football is very much like our English rugby game, but much faster," said Denis Compton, English Test batsman, after seeing West Perth defeat Subiaco in the West Australian Football League final on Saturday.
Compton, who has represented England at soccer, was surprised at the speed and spectacular style of play.
Note that I took the scores out (I didn't write down Subi's for some reason) and I also corrected a piece of bad grammar - the original said "defeated". Sure hope the proof reader got the sack for that.

Brief but to the point, and from a Pom! You know, from that country that invented rugby league? Nice pick up, TLPG!

Yeah a few poms know of it, one stayed a bit too long here once and walked straight into a goal post on his way onto the MCG ground for a quick look about, silly bugger.

wow this is kind of sad... I mean it would be irrelevant enoughif it was from 2013 since its just one random cricketer saying something complimentary but from 1946 youre really scraping the bottom of the barrel.
for comparison, RL had the endorsement of wayne rooney and flintoff and the British PM pre RLWC 2013.
