I copied this over from the tv ratings forum as not getting an answer.

You may be right and may be wrong ... I am just wanting to know how that would occur... Being counted twice. The only way I could see it happening is if 1. I had a set top ratings box. And 2 . I also had pay. Then 3. I would have to set the ratings box to me watching AFL on fta and then watch on pay.

I heard that you can access the main FTA channels on the pay box in the capital cities. That might be behind it. But I'm guessing.

Yep I can access fta on fox through fox but I'm only watching one game ? Who would watch the footy on 7 through their pay tv when you can watch it commercial free through fox footy .... But let's say some people do this ... Would this still be counted on fox ratings? This would only impact negatively on fox ratings as bit counted or wouldn't change them at all. If it is counted on fta channel 7 and not fox the only way it would impact ratings would be for the viewer to have a ratings meter box for oztam. Do oztam put meter boxes on houses with pay tv? But let's say they do, if someone is watching channel 7 through their pay tv, and lets say they have an oztam meter box, the only way it could be double counting would be for a person to set box to channel 7 whilst they actually watch the fox footy. ??? I'm not sure you can even do that with the boxes. But chances of someone first of all watching 7 for the footy when they have fox is so remote then to add in they have an oztam box them to add on that they set the box to seven whilst watching fox ???

It might. That's why I said what I did. Think of it like this; Seven counts the figures from Foxtel boxes but these numbers are also counted towards the AFL game. Also as I understand it, Fox Footy is not on the basic package so someone could have Foxtel but not have Fox Footy.

What if someone with a TV ratings box leaves it on nine but watches foxtel?

If the Foxtel box is also on Nine then that would be a double count.

Of course, in all thus premise the person would have to have a oztam meter box. I just can't see it happening.

We need to find out first whether oztam put set top boxes with households who have pay tv ? Even if they did , which I doubt, I still don't see where double counting would occur. Do fox keep stats for the fta shown through fox ?

Yes. Or rather it's possible to do it.

Phelpsy of these oztam boxes, who has them? are they in normal house holds, pubs & clubs? i believe the tv figures are BS, many pubs will not pick up the extended net works eg 7mate, & the majority of pubs i go in to, the majority of of the TV will be showing a NRL game but no one will be watching it!, there will be some guys watching the races, the dogs or horses, or a bunch of guys huddled around a tv set watching the English premier league

I believe they don't go into clubs at all, just homes. I also believe they have certain criteria as to what homes they go into but not too much as they would be trying to randomly assign them so as to get a good cross section on society. My limited knowledge of stats would also suggest that the amount used would be sufficient enough to generalize to the population.

My beef with it is there is only 3000 sets in Sydney - too little to get an accurate reflection maybe a very lose guide nothing more and again only one factor to take into account.

lol, ifs that's the case in a state populated of a bit over 7milliion. ratings are useless then, is it roughly the same set up for the foxtell boxes to the fta
