Interesting listen from some former players re: what needs to be done to address the drop in interest on both crowds and tv rating. I like how they just don't complain but actually put forward some solutions. What do others think that needs to be done to help get people to the game and stop the declining tv ratings?

For mine, I think they need to play state of origin outside of the home and away season. Truth is they could play SoO on Christmas Day and it would still be as massive as it is now. I don't see any reason to compromise the season proper for this series.

Take NRL off live TV, and if there are complaints tell the complainers to go to the game if they want it live. This will show just how many true fans there are, and they can move to the next step whatever that is.

SOO should be one game and not three, and I agree that it should be pre season or post season and not mid season. The season should be about the clubs.

Agree with the removal of SOO from regular season, 3 games draws in the crowds, money and viewers at its maximum really. Will never change.

9s ornament will help 2014 for sure, seems sick.

The biggest issue is dissilusionment with the refs and the rules. Rules need a massive shake up as does reffing. Also, all the popular teams are doing badly. Manly and Roosters are perhaps the least popular sydney teams after Sharks. Tigers, Dragons, Souths to an extent, Parramatta and Bulldogs are the popular teams. Most doing badly at the moment.

Wouldn't be beaten by any games that matter. SOO doesn't matter because it's NOT a club game!

Just have to go to the roar or LU forums to read of disillusioned nrl supports worried about the state of the game

IMO there's only one real problem and that's expectation.
Crowds and ratings are up on what they used to be a long time ago.
It's a neat little game and produces some arm wrestles and the occassional big hit.
Compared to other football codes around the world it does quite well.

NRL types have to get over the fixation of comparing and manoeuvring their game against AFL.
The NRL was established to consolidate the rl areas of Australia by expanding the NSWRL just after the VFL consolidsated state league teams into an AFL. The NRL has achived it's objective.

The future. The NRL can expouse a lot of energy trying to "expand". It can consolidate a little more.
OR the codes could work together and establish "sportring clubs" but that's never going to happen.
I cannot suggest the magic bullet only a succession of minor changes. The NRL receives satuartion press so it's hard to see any major changes.

In big trouble, imagine if the NRL came second like another code did this year when all the big games are taken into consideration?

Hmmmm, what code missed out on the top 4 spots again this year?

Oh, that's right, it was the local oddity called Victorian rules.
