Is the Barassi line a load of bs?

I never knew that a part of Queensland actually preferred AFL to NRL. I think the Barassi line was created by a AFL
supporter as he took chunks of Queensland, NSW and put canberra on the AFL side. Canberra clearly prefers rugby league, and while in the riverina AFL is more popular there compared to the rest of NSW but I think Rugby league is most popular in the riverina still, except maybe Albury.

Thoughts?

I always see in the Herald Sun on Sunday some leagues in New South Wales with clubs in Corowa, Mulwala, Finley and Deniliquin never mind Albury. Canberra is not a rugby league town. It's biggest sport is union as the support for the Brumbies has already been shown here! I don't know what the local AFL is like in Canberra, but Canberra has produced some great AFL names over the years. Alex Jesaulenko came from our nation's capital for a start!

The Barassi Line is there for a reason. Wagga has been great to the AFL (Carey and Kelly amongst others). The Danihers came from further north than that somewhere.

I don't know about the rest of Queensland, but the Gold Coast is certainly going well. And they keep going to Cairns also.

EDITING: I just looked at the following two pages on Wikipedia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AFL_Canberra
A total of ten clubs in the ACT (more in the competitions but I didn't count New South Wales clubs)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canberra_Rugby_League
A total of FIVE clubs in the ACT (as above for the others) and only SIX if you include the Raiders!!

Looks to me like AFL is doing better in Canberra than rugby league!

No Queanbeyan. Canberra itself likes AFL and RU.

Is easily AFL. the true border would be the Murrumbidgee River.

The Barassi Line was figuative not accurate and is contiually beinng distorted by the growth of AFL.

Canberra actually prefers RL and RU compared to AFL, I know that because I live there. And like a said, AFL is popular in the riverina but rugby league is still more popular. Just look at the great talent theyve given NRL.

Too true jack me lad.

Too true
Another mythical attempt by some flog fumbler to inflate the non existent popularity of bumbleball. Outside its heartland .
RL smashes it even in the riverina
Theres certainly a few more skinny lil shirt lifters nearer u get to the victardian border.. but RL rules the roost everywhere in NSW the ACT & QLD.
With maybe that queer little hole Albury being the only place of any size in these states that prefers that victorian abortion to RL

Without expanding, or going over old ground yet again, league is being pushed to the limit in smaller towns by the big, bad and super-rich AFL.
And this from a notorious local AFL-hater.

And yet there are more AFL clubs than rugby league in your home town. Gee you don't know much about where you live do you?

Nah, actually. There a 3 rugby league clubs in my district ( tuggernong ) alone compared to the AFLs one. There's the south tuggernong knights, tuggernong buffaloes, and the valley dragons. There's the Calwell swans, and the tuggernong hawks (who are now bankrupt and can't play in the NEAFL any more)

Cannot spell his own district. CLASSIC
jackassboy it's Tuggeranong you never got right three times over.

Tuggeranong is not bankrupt. The NEAFL has progressed to a single league.

I played rugby league for 4 years. In canberra alone, there is 9 junior teams in canberra alone. Many more in surrounding regions too.

I'll bet there's more junior AFL although I have no way of knowing where to check that. I'm talking senior open age. You have six clubs only, including the Raiders. AFL has ten, and Tuggeranong count even if they change leagues. Surrounding areas don't count because they are in New South Wales, not the ACT. Note that I didn't count Queanbeyan, Goulburn, Yass, Cootamundra and Cooma. You shouldn't either.

EDIT - Oh wait, here we go.
http://www.sportingpulse.com/assoc_page ... &sID=86148
Take away Cooma, Quenbeyan, Goulburn and Yass and they have eleven including TWO in your precious Tuggeranong and two clubs that look like schools! Beats your nine junior clubs!

The NEAFL has progressed to a single league.
Teams now play each other twice instead of the two conference systen.
This will increase the quality of the teams remaining in the NEAFL.

Cannot spell his own district. CLASSIC
