It's becoming pretty common now the cream of NSW RL turning to AF, something unthinkable 20 years ago but boys whose families have always followed RL are now firmly in the AF camp and why - because they love the game!

Jake Barrett,
cousin of rugby league star Trent Barrett.

He's the younger cousin of one of rugby league's favourite sons, but AFL prodigy Jake Barrett has no regrets in choosing to play the Australian game.
The cousin of former St George Illawarra, Cronulla and NSW half Trent Barrett was recently chosen to join four other NSW/ACT players to press for AFL recruitment at the National Combine draft in Melbourne in October.
He certainly is not short of contacts in professional football, also being the cousin of Hawthorn midfielder Luke Breust.

He said he chose AFL because of his love for the game, but also the difference in physical nature.
''It more suits my ability and my build more or less, but also because I enjoyed the game a lot more,'' he said.
It has been a big year for the mid-fielder and Temora product, who was invited to train at the Greater Western Sydney Giants Academy before making his debut in the North East Australian Football League for the GWS Reserve team.
He then represented the NSW/ACT Rams in the under-18 national championships in July, and his good form there led to his selection for the National Combine.
While he has not spoken with Trent recently, he has touched base with Breust, who coincidentally was drafted by Hawthorn in 2011 after representing the Rams, and plays midfield. ''The way he has developed in the last couple years is outstanding … it shows what hard work can do for you,'' Barrett said.
He said his time at GWS has developed him into the talent he is at the moment.
''It helps a lot really because there's that speed of the game, and physically there's bigger bodies, and I've really learned to do new things,'' he said.

Gold Coast is all abuzz about AFL at the moment and the suns. I would say it is getting right up there with the titans. Certainly growing at a rate of knots , and that from a fairly large base as well. It is run much more professionally I hear and that draws parents to the club. I tell you what though you can tell the kids who have played rl with their tackling, one kid, not a big kid by any means, did the best tackle the other night, and yep, him and his mate came over from a couple years of rl. On another note, my son is now kicking the footy at scho with a couple of mates. And there are many kids wanting to play as well, which is good. They generally play soccer but maybe times are changing. On that, in sport they play a "no rules" touch football. You can pass forward and back, and my boy likes this and wouldn't mind playing union ... He's and in and under type player and gets the ball a lot and people keep saying he would be good at union. Pitty they don't play union in summer .

. I bet he's also glad he no longer has to clean shit and pubic hairs out of his ears after a RL match anymore - he no longer has to worry about being obese and diabetes, no longer has to worry about losing all his mental faculties - and now he actually plays a game of footy and doesn't stand around for most of a match!

Hahaha NSWRL bum sniffing bumblers what a joke!

Yes he can. You can't. The game is going well in Sydney itself and you can't stand it.

Game is going well on Gold Coast too. Both codes co existing nicely as they should. A lot of people follow both as the suns are their team and they have watched them grow ... There's a real sense of ownership here. At baseball yesterday and most follow nrl and suns. Not too many titans supporters though as most have allegiance to a nrl club prior to titans however most followed suns as hadn't had an AFL team prior. That's a big plus... They also go to games as been with them . And lots of kids have the suns jumpers on at training . Of course a massive junior competition as well with southport sharks alone fielding 4 under 8s this season. But it is still embryonic yet already get up there with titans. In saying that, support of suns is very contingent on them being successful as they jump on and off teams up here like no mans business. Should hear the rubbishing of titans at moment because they have lost a few!! Suns often lead of local sport news too. And the local radio station broadcasts all home games.
