Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) figures from 2009-2012 show soccer is winning the battle against other mainstream sports for the hearts and minds of Aussie kids aged 5-14.
Soccer participation among children aged 5-14 grew by 10.3 per cent nationally and 22 per cent in SA, from 17,800 participants to 21,800.
The growth of junior soccer in SA was the highest of any state in Australia, 1 per cent more than the next best NSW.
Although Australian Football remains the most popular junior sport in SA, its participation figure fell by 8.6 per cent from 31,200 to 28,500 in the same period. Basketball was down 6.3 per cent and netball 10 per cent while cricket bucked the trend and grew by 6.7 per cent.

Notice you didn't list RL participation rates in SA - is that because they have declined OR they don't exist!

My guess is that football will prevail over soccer also.
And while you've got the wine out, be sure to drink to these figures from the ABS Children's Participation in Cultural and Leisure Activities, Australia, Apr 2012 report:
Participation numbers
Australian Football: 226,500
Rugby League: 109,900
That's right; nRL states cover 60% of the population, yet have less than half the number of children playing. Tell me, which sport's future looks bleaker?

AFL will prevail, once Australia fails to make the Soccer World Cup.

To put it more appropriately and accurately drac.
MArngrook + Ausfudge = 226,500
With ausfudge providing the more significant portion of the total

The ABS report I read didn't break down the participation figures into Auskick/backyard league or club football. The only requirement was a paid, outside school hours program lasting a minimum of six weeks. What was the name of the ABS report you read that broke down the numbers to reveal a significant portion of the total being Auskick?
And what does it matter if someone is playing Auskick or Backyard league? Both take place outside of school hours, cost money, and last for a minimum of six weeks. Are these kids not participating in a sport just because of the branding?

there was an article a while ago with in one of the papers, that had figures on the sporting participation rates accross all ages, soccer has been for years had the biggest participation rate of children up until the age of 16, then falls away dramatically, then the other sports of cricket, AFL and Rubgy (not sure which code) takes over
