A Hawthorn supporter accused of racially abusing North Melbourne players on the weekend has been issued a penalty notice after being identified by Victoria Police.
The supporter was located after the man was removed from the MCG during Sunday's game, however Hawthorn has been unable to identify a second fan accused of directing racist comments at North players.
Hawthorn went to lengths to identify the second supporter, believed to have been sitting in the general admission area, after the club received a complaint after the game, but had not been able to identify the fan by Tuesday night.
There was some confusion about whether the second person might, in fact, be the evicted fan, with the club receiving the complaint after the person complaining had already spoken to a media outlet.
No North Melbourne players heard or were made aware of any comments being directed towards them during the Hawks' narrow win, and the club did not receive any complaints after the match. The police action against the evicted supporter, whose comments are understood to have been directed at Lindsay Thomas, Majak Daw and Daniel Wells, has taken precedence over any penalties that might have been issued by the club or the league.
The AFL was advised on Tuesday night that the man had been issued the notice by police.
Hawthorn chief executive Stuart Fox, whose club looked at CCTV vision in an effort to identify the second fan, encouraged further complaints if people heard offensive comments in the stands.
''We would encourage any stadium patron to phone or text in to the advertised number and immediately report any anti-social or nuisance behaviour so the matter can be managed by the ground security, and the club if required,'' he said.
''Racial vilification at the football in any form is offensive and totally unacceptable - not just to the target of the vilification, but also to all players and supporters.''

The AFL acts on racism, while the nRL just sits on its hands.
Did that NSW Blues fan ever get banned for racially taunting a Queensland player? Didn't think so.

The AFL has acted on the fans yes. But I've not seen any action on the problem it has with its racist players. From what Goodes told us last year it seems as though its still unfortunately quite prolific on field. Did the AFL react to Goodes' statements?

Unlike the NRL, the AFL as you say acts on racism. The NRL's continual sweep, sweep, turning a blind eye to racism and hoping the issue will go away is hardly surprising. The CEO doesn't even know the players names let alone fans to point it out. NRL stuck in the 1930s.
AFL boss Andrew Demetriou expects supporters to turn on racist fans and turn them in to authorities

Racist fans should expect their fellow AFL supporters to turn on them, AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou says.
The AFL boss is pleased supporters helped identify a Hawthorn supporter who was racially abusing North Melbourne players during Sunday's match.
The man was ejected from the MCG match and subsequently issued a penalty notice by Victoria police.
"There is no place for any discrimination in not just our game, but in society,'' Demetriou told reporters in Adelaide.
"And the sooner people wake up to themselves, that it will be their fellow supporters that turn on them, the better. And that is what's happening.''
No North Melbourne or Hawthorn players heard the weekend abuse.
Demetriou felt a major shift last year in Collingwood's Dale Thomas' "significant moment" of dobbing in a Magpie supporter for racial abuse.
"This is how far people have moved,'' he said.
"And if people want to continue to go down the track of discriminating against people, abusing them, or vilifying them, then there will be no place for them in the game.
"They won't come to games, they won't be tolerated. They may as well just chuck in their membership and follow something else.''
Earlier, North Melbourne coach Brad Scott implored football fans to continue to report racially abusive behaviour.
"We're passed that as a society. I'd like to commend the (Hawthorn) supporter because we're beyond keeping your mouth shut when you hear or see something like that. Report these people,'' he said.
"There's no place for that in our game. None of our players heard what was said, so they can't be offended by it, but I can't stress enough that there's no place for that in our game.
"If you hear it, report it. It's your responsibility, you shouldn't just sit idly by. It's everyone's responsibility to report it because we've got to stamp it out of our game. It has no place in footy and no place in society.''

You're a dumb arse with no understanding of how the AFL operates that's why.
Do your research before posting such ridiculous rubbish in future please.

so , I know the AFL charge players and have done so, if found to be racially vilifying others . Clubs also impose own sanctions. As happened when a western bulldogs player did this to a suns player . The player is also named and shamed . But I guess you knew this already KE.
