Wow. It's somewhat an anticlimax to see the first professional gay american sportsperson, NBA player Jason Collins, come out all over the media today. America is having the same discussions which were had within the NRL and Australia, instigated by IAn Roberts coming out all those years ago in 1995.

So its great an NRL player and this NBA player, albeit 18 years later, have felt comfortable enough to be open about their sexuality.

What do people think about the AFL? Has there been no gay folk play in the comp? Do the gay folk within just feel there is no need to come out to the public? Or is it the shameful culture spread by professionals like akermanis and fans like swines which denigrates these sportsmen?


I'd suggest its the latter folk.

Maybe no gay people play football? It might not be an appealing sport for gays I guess.

Why wouldn't there be gay people in the AFL ? I'm sure if you look st percentage of population of say 2 to 3 percent then you could likely say that would translate to AFL footballers . I think there is also a rugby leauge side in Brisbane of all homosexual men.

The study also says lesbians have similar brains to straight males, which is probably why a lot of the women that do play football are lesbian. Some chick at my school was a bi sexual and played football, and there was plenty of lesbians who played on her team. Her words, not mine.

It's interesting the comment on the Acker article . I think he was misrepresented in what he said. My reading of it, and it's been a while, was that "unfortunately" his advice right now would be for a gay person not to come out as a club probably wouldn't manage it well and other players wouldn't . He was having a go at the fact this culture existed back then when society had moved on . If you look at Dave's comments for instance, using gay as a slur, or doggies gayfl comments etc as if by using the term gay is offensive . You go to local footy clubs, he'll sports clubs in general, and you still get this type of talk. I took a pink bag to baseball in Victoria and people were offended as it was pink and this somehow suggested gayness lol. I was actually asked by the coach if I wanted a spare bag of his lol and when I said no that's fine ... He said it may be fine for you but what do others think. I continued to take that bag everytime lol. I just thought it was country town homophobia lol. But there is that image in sport that you must portray some manly image, be a bloke as demonstrated by some on here, particularly when trying to put down AFL as not as tough and manly as nrl. But hopefully people want think twice and people font have to come out, or we don't have to put people down by suggesting they are gay it should come out of the closet etc. that we no longer have to be tolerant, just as we don't have to be torrent of left handed people .
