What is a raider anyway?

Post by Swans4ever »

Its strange how Football clubs get their mascot, Blues get it for obvious reasons, so too the Pies, Fremantle, Gold Coast, St.George/Ill, Melb Victory, Melb Hart etc.....Then teams have a link to an animal e.g. Richmond Tigers, Brisbane Broncos, Nth Melb Kangaroos. Others have a had it forced on them Sth Melb (now Sydney Swans) a Swan in refernce to the amount of Western Australian players in their side around 1935, the Rabbitos for the fact that players used to hawk rabbits on the side and "Rabbitooo" was a familiar call in the area. But what is a Raider? their official mascot is a Viking? But how does this have any bearing on a man made city which is inland and has no access from the sea? When first introduced they were know in a derogative sense as the lime green faders, maybe this is more apt with their more recent history of failure-2005 14th, 2006 7th, 2007 14th, 2008 6th, 2009 13th, 2010 7th, 2015 15th, 2012 6th and 2013 currently sitting 8th. Hardly a recent history that inspires the fear of a seaborn invader. Maybe thats why at least one of their fans are so desperate for attention and wants something to believe in because its a mystery why this club is named the way it is!
