I really like the idea of opening the Easter Show in Sydney with a Giants home game at Skoda Stadium. And bout time the Swans/AFL took on Cricket Australia regarding the SCG. Bring it on Vlad.
AFL may spike NRL season launch in NSW with early fixture

THE AFL is considering launching the 2014 season at least two weeks earlier with a blockbuster clash between the Giants and Swans at Skoda Stadium.
GWS chief executive David Matthews yesterday said he will submit a fixture request to the AFL to host the Swans at Skoda Stadium in round one - and has preliminary support from AFL boss Andrew Demetriou.
The AFL has already declared its intent to start the season earlier to go head to head with the NRL in NSW and Queensland, giving fledgling clubs Gold Coast and Greater Western Sydney more hype and commercial muscle in their competitive sporting markets.
However, in an audacious move, the AFL is hoping to go head to head with the NRL season launch in Sydney with a Giants clash against the Swans, Collingwood, Carlton, Geelong or Hawthorn.
It follows a series of dramatic developments for AFL in NSW yesterday, including:
A REVELATION from Matthews the Giants are looking to open the 2014 Sydney Royal Easter Show with an historic match at Skoda Stadium or ANZ Stadium on a Thursday, April 10;
SWANS boss Andrew Ireland throwing his support behind a ground breaking plan to completely overhaul the AFL season structure by scrapping the NAB Cup and extending the regular season to 24 matches and two byes before the finals series;
THE potential showdown between the Swans and Cricket Australia over access to the SCG, when the AFL's season is moved forward as expected;
THE revelation Ireland would consider hosting a Swans home game at Skoda Stadium; and
COACH Kevin Sheedy declaring the Giants should take a home game to South Africa or China as early as next season.

ahhhhh..... hasn't this been done before ?
yeah
the NRL would be shitting its pants with a 20K crowd for this season opening game next year
& thats against the swines
if it were against any of the other world famous melbourne suburbs
they'd be lucky to get 10K
a Panthers V Sharks game would round that up
seriously why do they embarras themselves with this rot

Swans bring in more people each year than cricket. I agree that cricket still takes priority at the SCG, but it won't be as quick a dismissal as you're alluding to.

you can't even get on the MCG as early as you want .... in a city that actually gives 2 frog farts about vicky kicky
but of course it makes sense that in a city that couldn't give a dingos barfed up road kill about the victorian game
that there'll be more chance of success there
& this one is serious too folks

All it's going to take is a few million $ to turn Junction Oval into a first class (domestic cricket standards) oval and the AFL will have access to the MCG at leasst 2 weeks earlier than what they currently do. Adelaide Oval is all football's from March 15 each year, so if the Redbacks make the Sheffield Shield Grand Final they will be forced to move it to somewhere like Glenelg Oval.

yes
the Victorian Cricket association has never had an alternative to housing 300 people to a shield game before
it never crossed their mind to go to another venue
oh wait
it just keeps getting stupider & studpier with this lot

A Shield grand final in Victoria would get way more than 300 to it dick head. Besides, facilities go well beyond ground capacity. Things like media facilities, change rooms etc would need to be considered as well. T\

Sounds like desperation. They feel GWS is not making inroads fast enough and need to do something to bolster the effort.

desperation is 'bring a friend for free to see the premiers.' This is just sensible exposure management.

19K turned up on a Monday Night, only about 4K of the Storms 13K members took up the bring a friend offer according to Storm officials
the midgets could play any team other then the swines & have a ... bring your family & all their friends night .... & not get a 3rd of that
if the swines didn't have SCG members to pad their crowd last week ... they would have been lucky to get 16K
that sorta puts it in perspective eh dickhead

So they actually only had a crowd of 15k, 4k were free.
What a surprise!
