approx same start time
same terrific weather
100% of Sydney's VFL sides on show .. including its premier
less then 25% of the NRL's sides on show ...
VFL... 23,690
NRL..... 51,686
wow, just wow
what a pounding ... an utter smashing .... a dicking for the Victorian game

Everything needs to fall into place for the nRL to get a decent crowd. Any little problem like showers for one minute can have disastrous affects on their crowd.

a holiday Saturday
great weather
the premiers on display
a derby
a mountain of media exposure in Sydney
and that still wasn't enough to get a decent crowd for the VFL
well at least one code did eh ?

Gratz one of your biggest crowds in years gave NRL a win in sydney you must be proud.

Public holiday. Biggest day of the year for cinemas apparently. Only day other than Xmas where almost everything is closed.

The tens of thousands that stayed away clearly thought it was just going to be a blowout. Afterall it was 1st v 18th. When these two teams are both top 8, 40k will be at least what they get.

Lets have a closer look at the swans games against bottom teams in the last few years:
2012 Syd v GWS 22k
2011 Syd v Bulldogs 19k
2011 Syd v Port Ad 20k
2010 Syd v WC 28k
2009 Syd v NthM 21k
2008 Syd v Port Ad 24k
2007 Syd v Rich 23k
So what about their big crowds?
2007 Coll v Syd 64k, Collingwood were 4th on the ladder
2007 Stk v Syd 64k Stk were 9th on the ladder
2008 Coll v Syd 59k Coll were 5th on the ladder
Hmm, and yesterday's game was an away game for the swans. Seems the crowd was perfectly reasonable for such a mismatch as 1st v last
