CHILDREN will have the chance to play two football codes in winter with the Greater Western Sydney Junior AFL competition moving to Sundays.

The AFL is hoping to attract kids who play other football codes, including soccer and rugby league, on Saturdays.

AFL NSW/ACT Greater Western Sydney manager Dean Connors said the decision was made after consulting several people.

"In the middle of last year we went through a consultation process with our volunteers and clubs and based on the feedback we decided to move the competition to Sundays," Connors said.

"At the end of the day we are competing with the other codes in the area. We think this certainly works for us and it will increase our participation.

"(Sunday competition) is now right across Sydney. The harbour side went to Sunday about five or six years ago and have been successful, so we have now made the change here."

The move has been made after the GWS Giants' first season in the AFL.

Connors said the code's registration fees would not drop.

"We wont be dropping our registration prices as our product is fairly affordable for kids," he said.

"We do have processes available to enable kids to play AFL from a financial point of view as well."

WHAT SOCCER SAYS

Nepean District Soccer Football Association president John Churchward:

As an association we don't have an issue with the AFL moving their competitions to Sundays.

The way we've looked at it is that it gives juniors the opportunity to get out and play sport either way, which is much better than them just sitting in front of a TV.

Don't get me wrong, we definitely want people playing soccer. I think also if you look at it the other way our participation may increase with kids who now play AFL able to play soccer on Saturdays now.

Penrith and Districts Junior Rugby League chairman Ian Robinson:

The only issue I see is in regards to what we have been hearing where the ARL Commission is supposedly talking about taking Sydney teams to play out of ANZ Stadium. I think if we can keep Penrith at Centrebet Stadium then the kids will aspire to play for their local team.

Also, we have our own support base and I do not think that will diminish.

I know the AFL have been pushing their big players in school visits, handing out packs and the like. But over the last 12 months and looking at 2013 the Panthers have been sending their first grade players to several clinics and schools as well.
Well well well, The AFL are moving there junior competition to sundays..................

Yep i sign that junior participation is not going well, get back in your Box.....

Shit thread is shit. It's about getting kids playing more than one sport.

I don't know how it is in Sydney, but in Adelaide when I was in school it was school football on Saturday's and club football on Sunday's.

1. Judging expansion after 1 year #-o
2. Judging expansion on junior sport policy changes #-o
3. Compare this to the avalanche of media coverage on RL expansion

after 30 years & a motza of money spent .. with an aim of getting a large number of kids playing vicky kicky in Sydney & indeed .. everywhere else in NSW outside the Riverina
the VFL is still on struggle street
why is the VFL not telling the truth about this & infact telling everyone the exact opposite

I think I saw that the junior club numbers in Sydney alone was just under 7,700. In my opinion that is quite a good number for a code which is behind at least 3 other football codes. I think that moving the junior playing day to a day which is AFL exclusive should help increase club numbers well above 10,000 over the next 5 years.
