I know Collingwood has got out of the Pokies - they say for moral reasons however I wonder if it was more business based.

I think the AFL clubs got into pokies a bit late.
Pokies were illegal in Victoria until the 90s. Grandma used to go to Deniliquin every couple of months for a fix lolQuolls2019 wrote: ↑Thu Sep 01, 2022 9:46 amI think the AFL clubs got into pokies a bit late.
The patrons of their social clubs mainly used it on game day and there was no major reason to change their habits.
There was too much competition from the pubs where it, for the most part, increased their clientele .
The social clubs were not as patron friendly as pubs, re meals and facilities etc.
There was at that time the beginnings of the backlash against the social impacts of pokies. (On line betting has had much more impact but less backlash, I know not why).
Some of the pubs that some clubs bought were on the verge of closure and didn't recover that well.
Pubs and bowling clubs have mostly done well out of pokies.
Some of my local football clubs say they have done well out of them some say they haven't, some don't even have them.
It isn’t just location, location, location but timing, timing, timing.
And so did I. Not that I knew your grandmother…Gone wrote: ↑Thu Sep 01, 2022 1:14 pmPokies were illegal in Victoria until the 90s. Grandma used to go to Deniliquin every couple of months for a fix lolQuolls2019 wrote: ↑Thu Sep 01, 2022 9:46 amI think the AFL clubs got into pokies a bit late.
