Parade for premiership winning Swans
Sydney Swans Media 11:46 AM Tue 02 Oct, 2012

The Sydney Swans will be honored with a parade through Sydney's CBD on Friday

New South Wales Premier Barry O’Farrell today announced a street parade will be held in the Sydney CBD for the 2012 AFL Premiers, the Sydney Swans, on Friday.

Mr O’Farrell said the parade along George Street to Sydney Town Hall will give Sydneysiders a chance to turn out to congratulate the Swans for the thrilling win over Hawthorn.

“Saturday’s extraordinary Grand Final win was a fitting reward for this champion team,” Mr O’Farrell said.

“The match will go down as one of the greatest Grand Finals of all-time - and it's testament to Swans’ never say die attitude that they emerged victorious.

“The Swans’ fifth premiership - their second as the Sydney Swans - occurred in the 30th anniversary season since the club relocated from Melbourne.

“In that time they have cemented themselves as one of the most respected football clubs across all codes in Australia and they do our city and state proud every time they take the field.

“Friday’s parade will give all Sydneysiders a chance to pay tribute to coach John Longmire, co-captains Jarrad McVeigh and Adam Goodes and all the Swans players.”

Sydney Swans Chairman Richard Colless today said the Club was extremely honoured to be extended the privilege of a street parade through Sydney to celebrate the Swans winning the 2012 AFL Premiership.

“We are humbled by the support from everyone in Sydney,” he said.

“I would like to the thank the New South Government, led by Premier Barry O’Farrell, and the City of Sydney for offering the Club the opportunity to celebrate the Premiership win with people of Sydney.

“There could be no more fitting conclusion to our 30th season in Sydney than celebrating a premiership with the people of Sydney,” Mr Colless said.

Swans Premiership coach John Longmire said the Club had received enormous support from the people of Sydney throughout the 2012 season.

“The support we have received throughout our finals campaign has been incredible. Nearly 60,000 fans turned out for our Preliminary Final against Collingwood, more than 2,000 fans attended our training session in Grand Final week and more than 5,000 fans attended our welcome home celebrations at the SCG on Sunday," Longmire said.

“It has been an amazing few weeks for our Club and it is a great honour to have the opportunity to celebrate bringing the AFL Premiership Cup home, with the people of Sydney."

The street parade will be held in Sydney on Friday October 5 commencing at 12.15pm. The parade will travel down George Street, and conclude at the Town Hall.

Yeah and once again shows how insular you Vics are compared with us Sydney siders.

We welcome our champions home the way they deserve unlike you insular Vics.

When is Victoria going to come into the real world? Reality check is needed in that State and quick.

How is Melbourne insular when we watch and attend sports more than any other cities in Australia? We cant help it if rugby is our least favourite.

Do they still have that bet between premiers about flying the other's flag or something? Get O'Farrell to fly the Storm flag!! Yeah, and get Bailleau to fly the Swans flag as well for consistency I guess.

The Victorian Government wouldn't close off the city streets for the Storm because there wouldn't be enough Storm fans to make it worthwhile. It would be seen as a nuisance to the majority.

Reports on the Storm civic reception referenced 'hundreds' of Storm fans turning out for the reception.

Not thousands. Hundreds.

HUNDREDS.

THOUSANDS of people are expected to venture into the CBD today to congratulate the Sydney Swans as they parade through the city.

The Swans players will follow the same route as the Australian Olympic Team when they paraded from the Overseas Passenger Terminal to Town Hall last month.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible, with many roads to be closed as a result.

The following roads will be closed at 10.30am:

George Street (Parade route) - between Hickson Road and Goulburn Street.
Alfred Street - between Pitt Street and George Street.
Barrack Street - between York Street and George Street.
Bond Street - between Pitt Street and George Street
Essex Street - between Harrington Street and George Street
Hunter Street - between Pitt Street and George Street.

Margaret Street - between Wynyard Lane and George Street and eastbound between York Street and Wynyard Lane.
Parts of Bridge Street, Druitt Street, Grosvenor Street, King Street, Market Street, Park Street and Pitt Street will also be closed after midday.

All roads are expected to be open by 3pm.

Special event clearways will be in place from 8am this morning throughout the CBD to assist with the parade.

Motorists should double check signage before parking as vehicles parked in special event clearways will be towed.

Additionally, buses that normally travel along George Street will be diverted onto Elizabeth Street, while some Railway Square services will terminate at the Queen Victoria Building between 10.30am and 3pm.

While the diversions are in place, passengers are able to use their bus tickets to catch trains on the City Circle.

Dave, i'm sure you'll also dismiss all the red and white the crowd wears as an extroadinary coincidence.

"People in the Sydney CBD always wear red and white" you'll say, "I bet more than half of the people at the Sydney Swans' parade wearing red and white have never even heard of the Sydney Swans."
