Oh deary me. What is going on?

We've been told for years that live Rugby League would rate well if only given the chance in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. Well the results are in. NRL games have been shown live each and every week in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth this season.

Sunday's live broadcast of Manly vs Parramatta attracted a total audience of 7,000 when shown LIVE in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth to a potential audience of approximately 6.5 million. Again 7,000 from a potential audience of 6.5 million.

Friday night LIVE NRL in PRIME TIME from 7:30pm didn't do much better with a total audience of 15,000 from a potential audience of approximately 6.5 million. Channel 9 need to stop the rot asap. How do you justify such rubbish ratings to your shareholders?

Hmm, just thinking, how does the NRL demand it gets $1 billion in its next tv rights negotiations? You'd be nuts as a tv executive to fall for that rubbish. Nuts I tell ya.

Looking at those figures the VFL, WAFL and SANFL > NRL.
IMO we should have a second tier national competition.

Then again, in Melbourne with the top of the table Storm, live NRL only rated 12k last night.

Good question. Don't think they have properly thought this one through. The broadcasters certainly ain't interested in paying anything more for 7,000 viewers out of a potential auidence of 6.5 million. Add to that every current club bar one runs at a massive loss.

Potential new franchises will soon get an answer on NRL expansion - but it's unlikely to be the one they're hoping to hear. Sin Bin has been told the ARLC is likely to make a definitive call on whether to expand in late August, around the time the television rights deal has been thrashed out. Should they decide to increase the number of teams, prospective franchises will be given four or five months to put in bids with a view to NRL entry in 2015. However, it's becoming increasingly likely the status quo will remain and they will have to wait longer still. While the broadcasters are always looking for more quality content, it's believed - at least in initial discussions - their appetite for more games isn't matched by a dollar commitment that would make new clubs feasible. The commission is also mindful that most existing clubs are running at a loss and extra teams would only further dilute the playing talent.
