Is Melbourne Starting To Fall In Love With Leagu

Post by pussycat »

With Origin ratings of 300 & 350K Has the romance began?

A delayed test match with 90 000 viewers. The first time the storm are shown at a decent hour and there last outing they drew 77K. The Swans, on the other hand, almost thirty years on and manageing just 56k in Sydney.

Is it any wonder the TV networks are linning up. The game is going balistic in Melbourne and Leaguue ratings for the 3 Eastern states will be Meganormous
Rugby League, the dominant force in Australian sport!

Surely this is a joke? A reverse troll?

RL averages about 30k in Melbourne. AFL about 60k in Sydney plus another 30k or so on foxtel.

The AFL GF rates 250-380k in Sydney without the swans and up to 900k with the swans. And this is for Saturday afternoon! Nothing rates that high in Sydney for that time slot.

Good one pussycat!

With good TV coverage and some grass roots talent comming through, the NRL will rate ok in Melbourne. With the Storm at the top of the ladder the Storm should rate better in my opinion.

Problem is the grass roots RL in Vic SA WA is almost non existent! This is the biggest thing which drives new fans of a sport, participation.

Have to say that the reliance on the State of Origin ratings is a massive misnomer. True support indications lie in the club level and not the representative level. Both elite and grass roots.

As has been pointed out, 30k average watching live prime time Rugby League on a Friday nights and you think Melbournians are falling in love with League? Oh dear indeed. #-o

Yes pussycat i think you're right here. The SOO numbers are just massive with one in 10 melbournites stopping and dropping everything to sit down and be entranced by one of the greatest sports of all RL. Yes that may not be your regular season crowd but it is having an effect. I was down in melbourne for the first round of the aflthis year. I really wanted to watch hawthorne collingwood but a mate who is mad on AFL but has recently become mad on the storm went to the storm game instead. I ended up in a pub watching the AFL match which was a ripper. Afterwards on the streets of melbourne city and in the bars there were storm supporters everywhere. I was shocked and i tell no lie there were more storm colours than pies of hawthorne supporters!!! I prob wasnt in the best part of town where all the locals go, i was near flinders station but this is what i saw. And i know there were many more at the AFL match that night but sheesh, there's a real following for league down there and as far as i know its only growing.

Quoted to answer KE's rubbish. I'll add that you saw Storm supporters only because they were bored and wanted more action elsewhere. Hawthorn and Collingwood supporters got their fill and went home happy.

More evidence that KE doesn't understand the game of footy!

Needed to be said.

Xman your numbrs dont add up 370k out of 4.5 is much closer to 1 in 10 than 1 in 8 you silly goose.

TLPG the title of this thread is relating to whether melbourne is "starting" to fall in love with league. I'm telling you now, all indications are pointing to yes. Storm supporters are growing and SOO support has shot through the roof. Almost 1 in 10 folk stopping and dropping everything to watch the big games, and tonight, if we're lucky, the Melbournites watching SOO might even reach Xman's lofty expectations of 1 in 8 melbournites watching the game...that's the spirit Xman! :thumbleft:

You're wrong. Very wrong. And you're too dumb and under educated in sport to admit it.

Needed to be said again.

When you provide proof that numbers of Melbournites watching SOO and supporting the Storm are dropping our members might believe you.

Until then TLPG, you're looking pretty loco my man. Llllllllloooooco!

Yes, my error. It's actually 8 in 100 people watched the last SOO. Hardly what I would call love.

SOO doesn't count towards a "love" of thugby. They've made an event out of it. The Storm is behind every Victorian based AFL club and show no signs of catching up.

So who's loco? Look in the mirror, Mr Ignorance!
