Awesome tv ratings, merchandise sales and crowd for the AFL.
Crowd dwarfed the NRL battle of the west the night before.
Well done Giants, Swans and the AFL

DESPITE the furore over the opening game of the season being played across the border, Melbourne footy fans still tuned-in in droves to watch Greater Western Sydney play its first match.
The Giants lost by 63 points, but their fans didn't go home empty-handed after splashing out $80,000 on GWS merchandise at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night.
And they didn't disappoint where Channel 7's ratings figures were concerned, attracting an average of 361,000 viewers in Melbourne, making it the night's top-rating program.
Even in NRL-mad Sydney, where the game aired on the network's digital channel 7Mate, the match drew a peak audience of 98,000.
More than 38,200 attended Sydney's historic AFL derby, dwarfing rugby league's own battle of the west where only 13,788 fans saw the Eels and Panthers showdown on Friday night.
"We put on a big show, we booked the biggest stadium in town and people responded, the numbers are one thing but the feeling among the crowd was another," Giants chief executive David Matthews said.

89k is very good for a secondary digitial channel, which generally rate 50% of the primary channels due to the fact not everyone has DTV yet.
I tell you what was pathetic, live NRL in Perth rated 20k on Sunday!!!! 20K!!!

Quick, rush and put a team over there stat.

20k for a live NRL game in Perth. Oh dear, and that was not a secondary channel.
Western Reds must be pumped.

And that's with no opposition at all.
20k isn't even statistical error.
I remember a few years back when ch7 got more than that for a blank screen.
The program or station failed to air for 30 minutes yet it still got reasonable ratings!!
Anybody else remember that?
That's why strict adherence to ratings figures is bs.

Exactly! Imagine when it competes with the AFL!
At least the AFL was up against the NRL on foxtel in Sydney and still got 82k on a secondary channel.

THE GIANTS ARE PLEASED WITH THE RESPONSE FROM THE PUBLIC SO FAR. PICTURE: PHIL HILLYARD THE DAILY TELEGRAPH
THEIR team might have lost by 63 points but Giants fans didn't go home empty-handed after splashing out $80,000 on GWS merchandise at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night.
The crowd of 38,203 for Sydney's historic first AFL derby also dwarfed rugby league's own battle of the west with only 13,788 fans turning up to Parramatta Stadium on Friday night for the Eels-Panthers showdown.
On top of a healthy crowd the AFL's season opener attracted a national television audience of 1.1 million people for Channel 7's live coverage.
Giants chief executive David Matthews is convinced the promising start is a product of thinking big but knows they have a long way to go.
"We put on a big show - we booked the biggest stadium in town and people responded, the numbers are one thing but the feeling among the crowd was another," Matthews said.
The Giants' next match in Sydney will be against the West Coast Eagles at Blacktown Sportspark. With a capacity of only 11,000 at the venue the match is expected to sell out quickly.
Canberra's Manuka Oval will play host to the Giants following two home games before the opening of Skoda Stadium at Sydney Olympic Park in round nine against Essendon. The prospect of selling out looks likely with the first clash between Essendon coach James Hird and his former mentor Kevin Sheedy.
They formed a partnership as star player and coach at the Bombers over 16 years.

Pop Sydney 4.6million - GWS v Sydney 89k
Pop Perth 1.7 million - Souths vs Broncos 20k
GWS vs Swans - Historic Momentous GWS first ever game with a multimillion dollar 2 year advertising and promotion campaign. Both teams based within 20km of the venue.
Souths vs Broncos - NRL regular season match both teams based 4000k++ from the venue.
I think mathematically and taking all into context here the RL game was more successful in terms of viewers. And lets not forget that 89k was peak viewers for gws swans.

GWS v Swans was on 7mate, which you rightly stated is not available to all TV viewers. The game was also on foxtel and attended by 38k who were not home to watch the game and be counted as viewers.
The NRL was on ch9 live in Perth and registered a pathetic 20k.
Nice try king failmuch

The game was shunted to 7mate because those in the media knew better than to embarrass themselves and put it on prime time fta channels.
2 years of promo Xman, an historic momentous occasion in the biggest city of the nation all for 89 thousand viewers
Just admit it the sport isnt that important in sydney. Not that much chop, nothing to write home about, fairly irrelevant and mysteriously odd to the majority etc etc. Just admit it Xman.
I can. RL isnt that important in Perth, there you go. But I know I'd rather a code i support be popular in syd than perth ... the most isolated city in the world
Ahhhh noooow i know why you wont admit it! :D

It wasn't shunted you dope! It was part of an agreement to show 4 live games to a non heartland market every weekend. This is a drastic improvement on the previous agreement which was essentially one or two FTA games only.
For many people in nsw and qld Its even better than the NRL get!
If the AFL isn't important the NRL must be non existent with corowds 1/3rd the size!

It was shunted, stop making up excuses.
Now just admit it, this momentous historic occasion was simply not momentous nor historic for the mass majority of sydneysiders. They found it, quite clearly, irrelevant, uneventful and not worth their time. Sydney brothers sisters mums and daddy's just had better things to do with their time. Comon Xman, you can admit it now, we all know you cant deny my comments, noone can. Its actually impossible to deny

so youre best off just fronting up and admitting what i say is correctimondo.
Otherwise you look like you've got an ass where your mouth is, two boobs where your ears are, a dikk where your nose should be topped with a sparkly pair of circular rose coloured, pube framed shades.
Now please Xman, for the love of god and for your own credibility, its time to admit it! Sydneysiders found the game neither momentous nor historic. In fact it was clearly quite an irrelevant occasion in this most populace and popular city in australia.
:P

Just because you think nearly 40k attendance and over 100k (FTA and payTV) watching On TV is irrelevant doesn't mean anyone else did.
