GREATER Western Sydney enjoyed its first-ever win on Saturday night, the AFL's newcomer beating Gold Coast by 13 points in its NAB Cup clash in Albury.
The Giants entered the final quarter just two points ahead, but overpowered the Suns to claim a 0.11.10 (76) to 1.8.6 (63) victory in front of a crowd of 7,000 at Lavington Sports Ground.
Locked at 63-63 for much of the last term after a Josh Caddy supergoal boosted the Suns, a late goal from former Port Adelaide utility Chad Cornes edged the Giants ahead.
Rhys Palmer then put the result beyond doubt when he kicked his second goal for the night in the dying seconds.
Liam Sumner also booted two goals for the Giants to go with his 17 possessions in an impressive display, while midfielder Toby Greene also starred.
David Swallow was the best for the Suns in the absence of Gary Ablett, while Campbell Brown enjoyed a rare job up front to kick three goals.
Ex-rugby league stars Israel Folau and Karmichael Hunt impressed in their first game opposing each other.

Love the pic! Good crowd for a pre season game at a fine regional venue.

At least they had a go with gusto. I remember when the Bears first won and they were all reading off sheets and it was TERRIBLE!

Re: First Win for the Giants
They looked like a much improved team on the weekend. The experience added through Mumford, Hunt, Shaw, Lamb will see them beat a few teams this season that's for sure. Good luck to em.vandyk wrote:couldnt wish for a better start to the AFL
