AFL players are on the field for longer, and run further, than any other mainstream professional sport in the world.

What this doesn't show is that the majority of the distance covered by RL players is walking.

The majority of the distance covered by AFL players is running.

Look at this article by Roy Masters featuring a sports doctor:
http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-league/leag ... -z9q3.html
Dr Nathan Gibbs, the former Roosters and Rabbitohs top-grade forward, recalls vividly his first game as club medico for the Sydney Swans.
''Physically, AFL is a two-hour running game where two things happen,'' says Gibbs. ''Firstly, the total distance you run is further than in an NRL game. Secondly, you run at a higher intensity during the game. AFL is a man-on-man game. You have to go with your opponent.
''In rugby league, there are lots of times you can have a rest. You can sit in the defensive line where the ball isn't. Folau will have to lose weight to run better. He doesn't need all his size.'' Similarly, Inglis would have to sacrifice weight for running capacity. The Storm are encouraging Inglis to run two kilometres a game. In AFL, he must run 14km
2kms running v 14kms!!! #-o #-o

Interesting and I'll pay that AFL players are fit bastards, especially the midfielders who would be fitter than many league players. Nice points beaussie.

Xman I think you're scraping the barrel though with Roy Masters who is quite unpredictable in his critique and journalism. Sometimes he's spot on other times cringeworthy. I mean the last quote Xman foolishly bolds is incorrect as it states an AFL player RUNS 14k per game. In Beaussies graph it shows they COVER 14 k per game. And there is no thought put to positional play at all in the cuttings Xman has provided. In the backline if a team is dominating in the AFL comp their players are walking for sometimes 5mins at a time. Add to that the ball ups and ball ins aswell as goals (often 8 per quarter) and behinds (often more than 8 per quarter) and you'll see AFL players walk around shitloads. Just go to the ground and you'll see it. League players cover only 4km less per game and the game is much more intense and close. You have to get back the 10metres every time, you get less breaks than in the AFL comp and if you're not constantly in motion, especially in the centre of the field you'll be found out eventually or often. The only reason NRL players dont run less is because the game is shorter and played on a smaller ground. RL is definitely physically more intense and taxing on the body, it requires much more strength.

The stats I showed were from a sports dr who worked with the Swans, not from Roy himself, idiot! #-o #-o

There is lots of gps data available on AFL showing the players run 14kms but cover more overall.

14 v 2!

Beaussie graph says 10k not 2 dumbo.

and seriously, did you think I wouldnt check? Again Xman you're getting dumber than I thought by the minute!

There is no quote of the swans dr saying they RUN rather than COVER 14k per game. This is Roy's silly mistake, and you quoted it. Now gimme a bestest and smartest point and a dumbarse point for yourself Xman.

*Another crisp left hook from the King.

He may not make that quote himself but he does say AFL players not only cover greater distances but much more of it is running. Roy makes the comments about running distances but given his article includes figures from an AFL sports dr I would say they have come from him as well. What makes you think the comments from Roy are a mistake?

I have seen GPS data on AFL distances and it is running or jogging 14kms or more. The distance from walking is excluded.

I will try to find it.

I'd add to that. Leagues most agile are more agile and most powerful are more powerful. But yes Victorian Rules players can run far.

I coming to you when I get sick - You know more than all of the medical experts, the AFL, Hunt and Folau.
About time you updated you knowledge of AFL and attended a game though.
They have these things called "rotations" where players are run into the ground and are close to exhaustion
when they are rotated.
I don't totally agree with it. Some of us think the balance should be more physical but it's hard to be more
physical if the other guy can run faster for longer.
