Well well well what a spectacle at newcastle in the wet with a crowd exceeding 30k. An overtime thriller with twists and turns and plenty of off field drama contributing to a great event.
I hope the first match of the AFL can be the same, but chances are, going on last year, it'll be over by the end of the 3rd quarter.

I think the crowd was 31k or something like that. Yep the place was all bbut sold out on a night when the worst rain front in decades is hammering nsw and victoria. Pretty impressive, especially for RL crowd standards.

It was 28k. You hit the nail on the head: impressive by RL standards.

NRL takes on the world
The NRL announced to the world it was back last night with a thrilling season opener between the Newcastle Knights and St George Illawarra Dragons that went into golden point.
How good was it?
So good that it was the second most talked about topic on Twitter worldwide! Think about that for a second: a game played predominately in Australia was the second most talked about topic in the whole world last night. Well done rugby league fans, it’s good to be back.
What was number one you ask? Some guy named Justin Bieber had apparently just turned 18, ho-hum.
Still the fact #NRLNewSti was the number one trending topic in Australia, and the second in the world, shows how much rugby league fans have waited and wanted the 2012 campaign to start. ................................"

Still much larger than your NAB Cup fixture last night that was free entry to all Gold Coast Suns members.
They supposedly have 10,000 members but only got 5,381. Must be fudging their membership numbers.
Piss poor display. The A-league in Brisbane even got a bigger crowd.

There's a difference between a pre season game and a proper season game, Cooee!!
When March 24 arrives, the AFL will show it's true colours.
Newcastle's crowd was good under the circumstances. Let's see what happens and whether or not that's their biggest crowd for the year. It's up the Knights to turn it on, on the pitch.

they may match it in 2 weeks against the Broncos
if they go well on the field ... & they should
25K plus crowds will be the norm ... not the exception for the Knights
utterly pathetic turnout for any type of game for the Thuns .. in fine warm weather
5K is a joke
