THE NRL’s value to the Nine network was clear last night as the opening match of the season was the top-rating show of the night in Sydney.

The first match for Wayne Bennett as coach of the Newcastle Knights attracted 474,000 viewers in Sydney, to rank above My Kitchen Rules’ 449,000, and added another 236,000 viewers in Brisbane to be fourth for the night up north.

The match helped Nine to a 29.4 per cent channel share in Sydney and 23.6 per cent share in Brisbane although Seven won the night in the five capital cities, according to preliminary OzTAM data.

7 still won the night.

Brisbane preferred my kitchen rules!  In fact over the entire nation the NRL came a dismal 12th with about 40% of the ratings for my kitchen rules!

Shocking for the opening game of the year!

Value to Sydney is not relevant when it comes to making TV deals. Value to the five capital cities combined is relevant.

Result: NRL value = Low

of course Brisbane preferred MKR .. there were no QLD sides playing wombat

my my wouldn't the the VFL like a game not involving a QLD side to rate 236K in Brisbane
they'd need 5 to get that many

So this is why the Broncos play 80% of FN games. It's the only way the NRL can get decent ratings!

What a disgrace! [-X [-X [-X [-X [-X

And yet AFL fans watch every team because it's such a great game!

If that's true then, you AFL fans must be very boring and lonely people.

Rugby League is my passion but it doesn't run my life.

It should. That's how passionate AFL fans are. And there are a lot of us. And I'm lucky enough to be paid to be involved.

ummm .. so 1.2 Million .. without the Broncos .. is not decent then ?
not ONE VFL game will get those sorts of numbers in rnd 1.. maybe not one in the entire season :-k

yet these numbers will be reproduced regularly by the mighty NRL
with or without the Broncos

You're right. The VFL wouldn't.

The AFL however would.
