What a shambles. Why is it that virtually all NRL clubs are broke?

COACHING great Phil "Gus" Gould fears the path rugby league is travelling will cause his own grandchildren to have no interest in the code.

We have 14 clubs that lose money every year.

Yes, not like AFL clubs who budget to break even. If the have a few unexpected costs they make a small loss. Most AFL teams do this infrequently.

According to Gould these 14 teams lose money every year. Their revenue is stuff all as it is, so clearly they can't afford to tighten their expenses too much further.

This code is in trouble folks. maybe their fans need to get off the couch and go to the games for a change.

It would be that many in the AFL too

but with double the actual losses in dollars

if it wasn't fof hand outs & charity
half of the AFL clubs would be gone ................... including all 4 in NSW & QLD with 3 of them not capable of operating wihout assitance & the Swans rapidly heading that way

You don't know anything about business, Dave! The turnover within the AFL clubs is a lot higher that it is with the NRL clubs, so the numbers will be larger whether they are black or red. All the clubs have the debts under control and all the AFL does is provide a short term stop gap once they are assured that in the long term the clubs are in good shape. Turnover is the key factor in this decision by the AFL to provide assistance.

Gould knows it's true hence the commentary he made. He knows rugby league is facing ruin if the clubs don't increase their turnover PDQ. That means more memberships and more people attending games. All the Sydney clubs need to up their attendance average at least, and by loads!

18 clubs in the black in 2015
well done to the NRL


AFL in 2015 will have 12 in near recievership
& another 3 battling to stay in the black

NRL clubs are littered with debt, poor membership numbers, lack of major sponsors and poor income. One can't even afford a CEO.

NRL clubs are growing ... they are part of the most popular code in the country
about to be rewarded as such in their next TV deal

with small operating losses to be wiped out as of next year
theres no stoping this code ... it will be THE sport of the next 2 decades

the AFL is a dying dinasaur
support crashing everywhere ... clubs bleeding funds like shot pigs
failing expansion
sticka fork in it
its done
