On Friday Lebanon’s Under-16s national rugby league team flies to Doha, Qatar, to play its first ever overseas match, against Qatar Schools Select on 17th January.

The team, which defeated Saudi Arabia Schools Select in the Middle East’s first ever official representative match in Tripoli in October, has suffered the untimely loss of two of its most experienced players in the Jerjess twins, who have volunteered for the navy.

The bulk of the team and its entire support staff are drawn from north Lebanon’s schools, a result of the successful first year of intra-schools competition played in Tripoli last year. The Beirut representatives, though, have gained from their experiences playing in the Bank of Beirut Rugby League Championship this season, with Remy Daccache particularly impressive for Wolves RLFC.

The team departs Beirut airport at lunchtime on 15th January. They will train in the morning before sightseeing in Doha on the 16th, then on the 17th they will tour ASPIRE sports academy in the morning before kick off against Qatar Schools Select in Doha Rugby Club at 3pm.

LRLF Director of Coaching Remond Safi said: “it is overwhelming to see a team being prepared by all participants from staff to players who are all first generation local Lebanese. This tour has attracted a lot of interest from schools and boys who are looking for teams to play. The team is well prepared and spirits are high among all - it will be an experience for them all to remember”.
