The official name of the game that originated and was developed into what we know as Australian Football was always officially known as "Football" , sometimes with adjective "Australian" to differentiate from other football codes.
This is NOT to confuse it with other colloquisms like "Australian Rules".
Now, for all the detractees, don't bother posting references where AF is called AR or anything else.
Where talking about the official name, got that, official name and nothing else.
From day one , clubs where formed and where called "Football clubs".
From day one , leagues where formed and where called "Football leagues".
If you search the newspapers like the SMH electronically you'll find AF listed under "Football".
Even in NSW it was the NSWFL that formed in 1903.
Then later it was the SFL that broke away in Sydney.
If you do a google search of clubs officially titled with "Australian Rules" there there was only a handful and almost all of those were O/S and almost all of those have been renamed to "AFL".
And yes parafeel, the Australian National Football Council was renamed once to the Australasian Football Council so technically you might say AF stood for Australasian Football briefly.
And yes parafeel, AF is promoted sometimes as "AFL" but that is stil a colloquism not the official name.

well said cos. but do you think Australian Football is a good name? I think either delusionalferalcatball (inspired by nswafl' contributions) or antiblackanddeckherball (parraeels contribution) are much more appropriate names.

I call it Football.
To avoid confusion I refer to AF or AR.
The marketing of "AFL" has seen benficial gains though grammatically I don't like it.

Personally, sure. But don't call it anything other than "AFL" in New South Wales and Queensland in the real world, otherwise they won't know what you're talking about!
