Just came across this research done by Bond University. Any wonder why the AFL is regarded as Australia's national sport. Absolute domination in the sports media. Very interesting report if you get a chance to read it.

To really put things in perspective for our NRL friends, the AFL has more than double the amount of news stories in the media when compared to the NRL. Double I tell ya. The joys of a truly national competition shown below. :P
Sports by weeks in list and total number of stories.

Sport / Weeks / Total number of stories

Sport weeks Total number of stories

AFL / 26 / 322812
Cricket / 20 / 179526
NRL / 19.5 / 166348
Golf / 5 / 27,092
Tennis / 5 / 59096
Rugby / 4.5 / 27613
Horses / 4 / 51625
Others / 7 / 68908

Table 4 and Figure 2 (above) show the dominance of AFL in sports coverage in the nation’s media. It appeared in the “top 5” list for 26 of the 44 weeks, with a total number of mentions in excess of 322,000 – more than a third of sport’s 900,000-plus total. Cricket comes in second with mentions in 20 weeks (almost half) of the survey period, but with a total number of stories not much more than half that of the AFL.

Rugby league is the third most popular sport with the nation’s media, understandable since it is limited to the eastern mainland states.

Nice find Beaussie.

However it just confirms what we already know. The AFL double the NRL on every measurable performance index bar fudged TV ratings.

You only have to google AFL for a period of time, say a day, week etc. They always double the number of stories the NRL get. Always.

Oh dear! The media print stories the public show interest in! If there were more RL fans they would print more stories! They don't. Not as many people read them BECAUSE there is double the amount of interest in AFL compared tothe NRL! :D

But Beaussie, I'm sure the research by Bond university is falsified because they're located in an AFL heartland state!!

Oh wait, they're not?? QLD you say? Oh, never mind!

Another KPI the AFL just smash all other Australian sports in.

You're right, fair enough.

Like cricket. No one went to the Boxing day test! It was a sham.

Wait! What? Nearly 200k over only 4 days? Oh Victorians do love AFL and cricket!

But nothing else.

Wait, tennis? Over 650k attend in 2011in only 14 days? Shite! They also love tennis!

But nothing else, except A league, motor racing, golf.......

It should be noted that this is in spite of the NRL having the media's direct ear through it's News Limited lackies.

I thought everybody knew that. Don't need the Bond University for that one, some media analyst prints that at the end of every year. Can only further improve with the GWS joining the Swans in the AFL.

You'd have thought Murdoch would've learnt by now and got on the AFL as a winner.
