this would be their 4th year in a row , of losing huge sums of money
Beaussie
you want to explain this
Geelong ..... 8 million
Brisbane ..... 2 million
they'll be plenty more to come
Port Adelaide in near receivership ... the Swans not much better
the AFL probably lost 20 million setting the Thuns up ... & they won't return a profit for many many years
probs 25 million will have been lost getting GWS off the ground by the end of next year , they may never turn a profit

Lions post big financial loss
Posted November 22, 2011 20:43:25
Brisbane has confirmed a loss of almost $1.9 million at the end of a tough year for the AFL club.
The Lions managed a trading profit of $498,185, but depreciation and interest costs meant a net operating loss of $1,855,926.
"While the loss was in line with expectations, it is certainly not what this club wants nor should accept as we build a sustainable business model engineered to achieve long-term success," chairman Angus Johnson said.
The Lions fell from 13th to 15th on the ladder this year, winning only four games, and also sacked key forward Brendan Fevola in February.
Johnson said their poor on-field performance had a direct impact on the club's financial result
a 3 ringed circus is the AFL

Depreciation and interest costs associated with their mega new social club in Springwood are the explanation. Great to see that despite a woeful onfield performance, the Lions still managed a trading profit of half a million. Next season will be a better one for them. Nothing to worry about here. All is good especially with the AFL's $1,253 Billion tv deal now banked with increased distributions to all clubs on the way.

The social club is new and it's revenue will peak in 2012. It will go to a much higher level than where it's at now. Therefore the debt will be serviced even if the club has another poor on field season. Wishful thinking, Raiderdave.

The Bears were never in any major financial trouble. They wouldn't have been able to take over Fitzroy if they were.

Its a real concern for flogball in SE Qld
its seems the derogatory effect on the Brisbane side with the introduction of the Gold Coast side has been far worse then anyone thought

Only our lot?
Hahaha, I remember seeing the swans on TV every weekend when I was a kid and they'd have been lucky to have 5k in attendance, yet the average was always a lot more.
My brother was walking past the SCG one day and they were that desperate to get people in they even offered him a few beers with his free entry, he laughed and walked away.

wow what a great example of how the AFL won in Sydney. They have gone from struggling to having more membership than any Rugby League club in Sydney. Amazing, I love how eelsfan always has great examples of the AFL winning.
