Suns sure of attendance war win

Post by Beaussie »

Surely the NRL will be smart enough not to try and take on the AFL juggernaut on the Gold Coast in 2012.
Suns sure of attendance war win

Nick Smart | October 29th, 2011

TAKE us on again if you dare.

That is the AFL's taunt to rival codes on the Gold Coast after yesterday's release of the 2012 AFL draw.

The Gold Coast Suns and the Titans clashed three times in 2011 with the AFL's newest team winning the attendance war on every occasion.

The AFL draw is now set in stone and Suns chief executive Travis Auld said big schedule clashes were letting down supporters.

"The NRL has the benefit of seeing when we're playing and the ability to work around that," Auld said.

"I'd hope they use some common sense and manage their games to help Gold Coasters, who want to support their teams, be able do so.

"I'm not too fazed about fixturing of other activities ... what I really want to make sure is we get our fan experience right."

Auld said he was more concerned about his own product than what the NRL are doing.

"I think we managed it quite well last year," he said.

"All we can do is focus on us so we have our draw so we know when we are playing up here and when.

"It is all about now putting some programs in price to drive ticket sales and our own membership."

The gold coast said in the 90's they dont want Rugby League in their town and they are saying it again now.

The question is how long until the TItans join the massive list of failed league clubs :

Newtown Jets,
North Sydney Bears,
Adelaide Rams,
Perth Reds,
South Queensland Crushers,
Northern Eagles,
Hunter Marines,
Gold Coast (Giants, Seagulls, Chargers) lololol.
St George Dragons
llawarra Steelers
Balmain Tigers
Western Suburbs Magpies

All but 1 of those clubs mentioned were killed off as a direct result of the financial pressures brought to bare by News Limited, in there takeover of the rugby league . How many clubs did yor code lose prior to the mid nineties???
Rugby League, the dominant force in Australian sport!

the Suns clashed 3 times & won everytime did they ?
a side that was shiny new in their first year ... with the cheapest seats on offer in Australian sport ( soon to be 2nd cheapest when GWS enter next year )
up against a side with the most expensive tickets in Australian sport that were at or near the bottom of the NRL ladder all year

& they struggled to beat the Titans on the crowd front
wow .. thats a worry 8-[ they should have pumped them ....... but they didn't
, no wonder they're pleading with the NRL to cut them some slack next year
F em , go straight for the jugular

2012 is going to see 2 things happen
the Titans are going to improve ( a far stronger list then 2011) & I mean considerably , challenging for the top 8
the Suns will go up the ladder ... 1 spot , to 2nd last in front of GWS

while I'm not expecting too much of an increase in the Titans crowds , watch the Suns support vanish & I confidently expect the Titans to finish in front of the Suns crowd average wise in 2012.
the NRL draw when it comes out on Sunday won't reveal too much as only the first 5 rounds will be actually scheduled , & it will be round 5 in the NRL by the time 8 of 9 first round AFL games kicks off .. but I hope there ends up being 6 Gold Coast clashes between these 2 sides in 2012.

& I also hope the NRL targets GWS too ... with there being 4 massive all Sydney clashes in round 4 of the NRL... on the same night , the Swans play GWS at ANZ ... jam it right up em , go straight after their debut , I mean why not ?
& make sure every time they play in Sydney ... theres a big all Sydney NRL game near by
make these new guys feel welcome & show em the love I say ...
big round of applause for GWS =D> =D>

Even with the Titans fudging crowd numbers all season, they still couldn't get close to matching the Suns. It is abundantly clear that the Gold Coast is without a doubt AFL heartland. Expansion works well for the AFL.

The Titans are the NRL's 3rd attempt at establishing a team on the Gold Coast. Signs aren't looking great either when after just a few seasons, the club has had to resort to fudging crowd numbers continually. As with the other teams listed above, expansion for the NRL has been a total disaster.

THE Titans' crowds crisis could be worse than originally feared.

Stadiums Queensland is about to launch an investigation into a ticketing error that led to almost 14,000 extra fans being added to the club's total attendance at Skilled Park during the past 12 months.

As the Titans and AFL's Suns wage a cross-code battle for fans on the Gold Coast, a probe of Stadiums Queensland's most recent annual report uncovered major irregul-arities in the Titans' official home crowd figures.

The 95-page government report, detailing the activities of Queensland's nine big sporting stadiums for the 2009-10 financial year, showed:

* None of the Titans' home crowds announced at 14 games matched the attendances printed in the annual report.

* Thirteen of Gold Coast's 14 games featured inflated attendances.

* The greatest discrepancy was an extra 2209 fans for the Titans' home clash against the Knights last year.

In the 12-month period, the Titans' total crowds for their 14 home games, according to the annual report, was 237,527.

Yet the club's total attendances based on game-day announcements was 251,324.

The extra 13,979 spectators equates to a beefed-up attendance of nearly 1000 fans, on average, per home game.

On five occasions, the Titans' game-day crowd announcement exceeded the relevant annual report figure by more than 1500 fans.

A Stadiums Queensland spokesman said the organisation would look into the reasons for wildly fluctuating crowd figures at Titans home games.

Ah NO, that's just your pathetic attempt at deflecting attention away from the dire situation the Titans are in. 3rd attempt at establishing a Rugby League club on the Gold Coast and already after just a few seasons, the Titans have had to resort to fudging crowd numbers. Most hilarious part however is that even with fudged crowd numbers, they still can't match the juggernaught that is the AFL/Suns on the Gold Coast.
