was a good round of football from both codes, 1 good game 1 meh game in both comps.

David Gallop will be cursing the day they let NZ into the comp though. This wont be good for ratings.

so everyone else has to watch on TV

Yes and when ones adds attendances and TV viewers then the NRL wins.

This thing about membership is another AFL myth in that in NSW in particular people joined the Leagues Club(there is a clue in the name) and regarded themselves as members of the football club.

It is only in the last few years that the NRL has sought to differentiate the licensed club membership and the football club membership. The great majority of licensed club members still see themselves as members of the football club

So a $5 leagues club membership is now considered a club membership. Oh god, no wonder the NRL is a financial mess and so reliant on pokies to survive.

Now Beau has naive or disengious can one be. The fact is that the leagues club membership was "always" regarded as football club membership /support.

So the AFL does not have a huge membership advantage it is just the NRL is constructed differently.

Just like the TV ratings argument when those "other people" aka the regionals are added the NRL wins the AFL fan changes the argument to dollars and the "regionals dont matter" for TV contract.

Now the membership argument turns to how much the membership is worth in dollars. Well Leagues clubs are businesses that somehow manage to give football clubs somewhat more than the membership annual fees are worth.


It seems that the AFL fan cannot understand/tolerate difference to how they see the world. It is the sort of ignorance/arrogance that has left the sports fan north of the Murray cold

Really? So it got you into games yeah? Wow, $5 for a season pass and full membership rights. Any wonder why NRL clubs are so broke. Funny thing is even a $5 season pass didn't improve the NRL crowd average to more than 15,000.

So the membership issue has turned into a game attendance argument.

You also manage to miss/ignore the point that Leagues fund football clubs through their overall revenue generation as opposed to the low cost membership model they employ.

I guess it is that 'difference' thing that AFL fans struggle with.

On the profitability of the NRL clubs yes they aspire to the financial heights of Brisbane or Port Adelaide.........

You seem to equate membership with match attendance as opposed to support in general.

The majority of even AFL fans do not actually attend the match ie they watch on TV but also buy the merchandise,read the paper listen to the radio. Are these majority second class AFL supporters?

The NRL has decidley more people who regard themselves as supporters and show this through their Leagues Club membership. Which is a formal commitment.

They regard themselves as supporters which I guess is all that matters to them at least.

However, I guess just like regional TV viewer they are 'second class" supporters because the AFL fan says they are. Why because they do not meet the standard as decreed by the "esteemed" AFL elite to be a supporter/member.

One wonders what colour the sun is in this AFL world. Is it the same as for the rest of us?

Now if I may, I'd like to build on Enarelles superb point. I worked at the South Sydney Rugby Leagues club for several years. And I can tell you that enarelle is spot on. The vast majority of members, bar a few locals who liked the cheap beer, were passionate souths fans. Some went to the games, some did not, some were too old and physically incapable of going to the games. But none of this really mattered, they all supported the team!

Beaussie narrowly equates crowd attendance as THE indicator of support. He's oh so wrong. And when he is old and frail and cant make it to the games anymore he should receive his own medicine and be named and shamed as someone who does not support his team or the code.

Yeah and that club was a raging success right. Still yet to re-open after how many years? Gee gotta give it to them locals, they sure do know how to support their club/team.
