Where the Bloody Hell are you Sydney NRL fans?

Post by Beaussie »

33,136 at the SCG for the AFL. Meanwhile next door at the SFS, 10,146 for the NRL. :P

Excuse the Lara Bingle reference, but a simple question must be asked of Sydney-based rugby league fans: where the bloody hell are you?

A bizarre situation unfolded in the Harbour City on Sunday, when the Sydney Roosters-Newcastle Knights game at Sydney Football Stadium drew just over 10,000 fans through the turnstiles.

That crowd figure in itself was not overly surprising; the average crowd for the four matches so far in round 11 is around 14,000.

Meanwhile, 33,136 AFL fans flocked to the Sydney Swans-Hawthorn game next door at the SCG.

It must be noted, however, that the Swans play at home once every two weeks - hence Sydney's AFL fans get just one home match every fortnight to attend in the flesh. Also Hawthorn are among the better supported AFL teams, a side that draws substantial support home and away.

What did you make of the crowds in Sydney on Sunday? Are you surprised State of Origin Game II hasn't sold out? Have your say below

Against that, the Roosters-Knights game was, at least on paper, a bit of a stinker. Two midtable teams without their State of Origin stars would always struggle to excite the neutrals. And in Origin week, the buzz around the NRL premiership is always a little muted.

But the crowd figures are weighed so heavily in the AFL's favour it is easy to think “aerial ping pongâ€

Yes I agree Rugby League attendance at the game is abysmal in comparison to the AFL. Although we have to remember in Sydney there are many rugby league teams compared with just the one AFL side.

Therefore the swans have the whole of sydney to follow them.

It will be interesting to see if their supporter base drops when west sydney come to town...

Typical pathetic Rugby League supporter excuse. If that statement had any truth to it, AFL crowds in Melbourne would be as low as NRL crowds in Sydney. Ridiculous isn't it?

Beaussie why so aggressive? Or is it defensive? Why dont you engage in the debate.

If you read my first sentence, which you have left unbolded, you will see I agree. Rugby League supporters just dont get out to the games enough and it is abysmal.

Can you perhaps respond to the last sentence of my post above please, rather than going berko.

I'll answer it. It won't. West Sydney will die a horrible death.

I'm just sick to death of hearing NRL supporters with pathetic excuses as to why they don't support their teams by attending games. Just out of interest, how many Parramatta games have you attended this season?

As for your last question, GWS is about growing the AFL market in Sydney with a game of AFL in this city every week as oppossed to once a fortnight with only the Swans. Add to that the Swans don't represent western Sydney too well in my opinion.

Well as a supporter of both codes I think I can give a fair summation. The NRL has a higher viewer satisfaction as a televised sport. I and many others I know have only come to appreciate Aussie Rules after seeing it live. You simply cant see or follow the structure of Aussie Rules on TV. It can often just look like a messy run around after a ball, when it is obviously not once you see it live.

I've been to no parra games but this is simply because I've been away travelling round the country for most of the season. And because it's almost as good to watch it on the tele. You can see the structure pretty well and you know where the ball is going. AFL diff story on tv.

You don't support AFL, KE. You are showing your NRL bias every time you comment.

:blahblah: You are dribbling again TLPG. Stop stating what you dont know.

On the contrary I dont support bias one eyed supporters like yourself and beaussie. I think people who behave like yourselves on this site turn many people off the sport...

You are the one who turns people off with your bias against reality.
