AFL/NRL Finals TV Ratings

Post by Beaussie »

Channel Nine and its rugby league won Saturday night (with 28.1 per cent of the prime time audience) and thus Nine won the week. Channel Ten and its AFL came second on Saturday with 27.4 per cent of the prime time audience. Seven's desperate ploy to counter the beef with sugar -- showing 'The Sound of Music' for three and a half hours -- attracted just 543,000 viewers and left Seven in third place with 21.9 per cent.

Wow, how good are those ratings for the Swans against a live NRL final. The Swans vs Eagles game also peaked at 450,000 in Sydney. :D

Meanwhile the live broadcast of the Melbourne Strom vs Parramatta Eels attracted 99,000 in Melbourne compared with 541,000 for Collingwood vs Western Bulldogs.

NRL claims victory in battle for bums on seats, couches
September 12, 2006

THE NRL was celebrating on two fronts yesterday after posting significant gains in crowds and television audiences.

The NRL crowds were the biggest on the first weekend of the finals since 1996, thanks largely to a 53,387 Suncorp Stadium attendance, while host broadcaster Channel Nine reported strong figures - except for the qualifying final between the Bulldogs and Canberra.

The finals produced the most watched programs in Sydney on Friday and Saturday, and the third-most-watched programs on Saturday and Sunday.

Friday night's opener between Newcastle and Manly had an average of 501,000 viewers in Sydney, with a peak of 584,000.

Saturday night's first clash, Brisbane against St George Illawarra, averaged 504,000, just 1000 viewers short of last season's Brisbane/Melbourne encounter. However, the Bulldogs/Canberra match averaged just 362,000.

NRL officials were claiming a victory over their AFL rivals. The double-header went up against the Sydney Swans/West Coast AFL final, which attracted an average of 172,000, but peaked at 450,000.

NRL director of media and communications John Brady insisted the flirtation with the AFL was brief, however, with quarter-hour broken-down figures revealing many people flicked to Channel Ten to check the score - and then possibly watch the dramatic finish - before changing back to the NRL.

But the weekend was bookended by another encouraging figure - the Melbourne/Parramatta game averaged 513,000, peaking at 618,000.

The game was also beamed live into Melbourne homes, with a peak figure of 133,000 in the AFL capital, slightly disappointing but not unexpected.
Looks like there was some leakage from the Bulldogs v Raiders match which was played in terrible conditions andturning into a rout not long after half time to the final stages of the Swans match which some on Big Footy are saying was the match of the year.

I would love to see the breakdown of the AFL game in Sydney in 15 minute periods..if the average is 170,000, and they peaked at 450,000, there must have been some pretty skinny periods in there as well ( sub 100,000...)

Australia wide, it looks like the AFL thumped the NRL in the TV ratings stakes.

In addition, more Sydneysiders watched Collingwood vs Western Bulldogs in the AFL, than Melbournians tuning in to see their own Melbourne Strom defeat Parramatta Eels in the NRL finals broadcast live into Melbourne.

Is that not a huge disappointment for the NRL and Melbourne Storm whilst being a huge boost for the AFL in Sydney?

Ten's finals coverage proves popular

Rest easy people in the south of our great country; finals time is upon us and that’s the time when the northern hordes with their ‘crashball’ approach to the glorious game try to convince us of their superiority.

Don’t worry, fighting this lot off will be easy once again, even if their team, ‘The Bloodsâ€Â
