Smith, Grothe 'thrown out of pub'
Friday Aug 18 11:58 AEST
Parramatta rugby league halfback Tim Smith is at risk of being sacked by the NRL club after allegedly being thrown out of a pub for drunken behaviour.
Smith was warned by the club in June that he would be fined $10,000 and his contract would be in jeopardy if he was caught drinking again after several alcohol-related incidents.
Macquarie Radio has reported Smith was allegedly refused service and kicked out of a pub along with teammate Eric Grothe.
Smith was fined $1,000 by the club for a drunken scuffle with Test cricketer Michael Clarke at a pub in Cronulla in June and agreed not to drink for the rest of the season.
He had turned up to training affected by alcohol on May 15, the same day Brian Smith quit the club as coach.
Management from the Intersection Tavern at Ramsgate in Sydney's south confirmed to Macquarie radio there had been an incident.
The tavern said after one patron was refused service, another member of the group attempted to be served and the players were asked to leave.
In an email to Macquarie radio, an eyewitness claimed the players were "drunk beyond all belief".
The eyewitness said the players were swearing and Smith was spitting on the carpet.
When the players were refused service, Grothe allegedly started banging the walls until teammate Daniel Wagon, who was reportedly well behaved, escorted him out of the pub.
In June, Parramatta chief executive Denis Fitzgerald had called an alcohol summit with players after several incidents.
Winger Jarryd Hayne was fined $1000 in June after admitting he bit a woman on the arm while intoxicated at The Roxy nightclub in Parramatta.
Fitzgerald and the club's media spokesman were unavailable for comment.
What in the name of fuck does it take to get through to these clowns. Line the merkins up and shoot 'em!

AFL star's assault charge adjourned
August 16, 2006 11:08am
AN assault charge against Port Adelaide AFL ruckman Dean Brogan has been adjourned for more than a month.
Brogan, 27, has been charged with assaulting Adelaide oral surgeon Dr Zahl Khouri in October last year.
Brogan and Dr Khouri were both walking their dogs at a park in the inner-Adelaide suburb of Goodwood when the alleged assault occurred.
He was summonsed to face court in July this year.
His case came before the Adelaide Magistrates Court today, where lawyer Mark Griffin asked for a delay to take further instructions.
Prosecutors are still deciding whether the footballer will also be charged with assaulting an Adelaide Crows fan at Adelaide Airport in June.
Brogan was travelling to Melbourne to play for Port Adelaide when, after reportedly being taunted by a Crows fan, he allegedly punched the man on the nose.
Brogan, who later apologised for his actions, was fined $5,000 by his club for his role in the incident.
In court today, Magistrate Greg Clark listed Brogan's case to appear again on September 25.
Brogan did not appear today, as he was not required to.

Ace charged over pub attack
August 22, 2006 12:00

RUGBY league player Steve Matai has been charged over an alleged assault at a Sydney pub.
Manly star Matai, 22, is accused of headbutting a 31-year-old man at the Surf Rock Hotel at Collaroy, on Sydney's northern beaches, on June 10.
Without naming Matai, NSW Police today issued a statement saying a professional footballer had been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and common assault.
The charges relate to an incident in which a Mona Vale man allegedly suffered a cut to his nose, facial bruising and swelling after being grabbed by the neck and assaulted about 11.50pm (AEST) that day.
Matai was charged after attending Dee Why police station about 2.30pm today.
He was granted conditional police bail to appear in Manly Local Court on September 13.
Manly chief executive Grant Mayer said last week the Sea Eagles had launched their own investigation into the alleged incident, and questioned why it had taken so long for the matter to be brought to the attention of police.
"The players were not intoxicated and were on their way out of the hotel," Mr Mayer said late last week.

At lease none of you blokes swallowed the Drug test story in the SMH today...Video tipped to clear charged Matai
Tuesday, August 22, 2006 - 7:41 PM
Manly is confident CCTV footage will clear centre Steve Matai of any wrongdoing after the New Zealand centre was charged with assault.
Matai has been accused of headbutting a 31-year-old man at the Surf Rock Hotel at Collaroy on Sydney's northern beaches on June 10, the night after Manly's round 14 defeat of Wests Tigers.
It's alleged Matai grabbed a 31-year-old Mona Vale man by the neck as he entered the pub and head-butted him, causing a cut to his nose, facial bruising and swelling.
Matai was charged at Dee Why police station and was granted conditional police bail to appear in Manly Local Court on September 13.
The 22-year-old will defend the matter and has the backing of the Sea Eagles, who viewed the hotel's CCTV footage as part of their investigation.
"Steve's happy to defend himself against it all," manager Gavin Orr said.
"We've looked at the video and he'll be fine.
"We just want to defend it, get it over and done with and concentrate on playing footy.
"We believe the person who made the complaint was not justified in making it.
"Even the Manly club have seen that footage so we're pretty confident about it all."
Solicitor Mitchell Cavanagh confirmed his client would defend the charge.
"I can tell you that as a matter of certainty, a plea of not guilty will be entered as the matter will be defended," he said.

I referred to SMH didn't I?
Apparently Roy Masters said on Wednesday that the code would be rocked by a 'performance enhancing drug test'...
We are still waiting...
By the way.. what happens in the AFL when a player fails a drug test for Cocaine??
Thats right - nothing...
So don't try to put shyte on the NRL/ clubs for trying to get this illegal activity out of their game....
