Around 12,000 fans are expected at the former home of the Rams tonight, with SARL development manager Bruce Walker telling Big League: "Since I came down here 12 months ago, it's become evident no one down here even knows rugby league exists."

Apparently there was lots of tv promotions, newspaper articles in the The Advertiser as well as the Melbourne Storm visiting many schools in the lead up. Why then such a poor crowd for Adelaide's first NRL game in years? What happened to the predicted 12,000 crowd?

It would seem Rugby League is dead in South Australia. I guess the people of SA aren't willing to give the NRL a second chance after having their Adelaide Rams kicked out of the comp.

Bad weather on Easter Sunday up on the Gold Coast. Still a bigger crowd in attendance for the AFL on the Gold Coast than the crowd for the NRL in Adelaide last night.

It was mentioned during the half-time break that the next game on the Gold Coast for the AFL is just about sold out already and the Gold Coast City Council and Southport Sharks are committed to a stadium upgrade and hosting more games next season in preparation for either a relocated Victorian team or their own new team. Considering the conditions today with rain on the Gold Coast, I wouldn't think the AFL is too disappointed, especially when Melbourne's form is taken into account.

Speaking of threads on Big Footy... they are a bunch of gutless turds over there..

Some fark knuckle started a thread on the main AFL board about the RL crowd in Adelaide last nigt, which attracted the usual comments from the rabid dogs that frequent the place over there...

When the GC AFL crowd came through, the thread quickly got moved to the RL section, no doubt to save embarrassment before the Leaguies could retaliate...

Gutless Big Footy mods!!!! :x

That finders is one of the biggest tools I have ever seen post on a message board... ( that is saying a lot I know..,)

He never posts anything positive about AFL, just waits to post something negative about RL or Sydney/NSW in general...

What a bitter idiot he must be.... :?

League officals "encouraged" in Adelaide

Adelaide encouraged by Panthers
By Doug Robertson
April 17, 2006

NEGOTIATIONS have already begun to bring the NRL back to Adelaide next year after the "encouraging" clash between Melbourne Storm and Penrith on Saturday.

South Australian Rugby League chairman Paul Shepherd says the body is in discussions with "four or five" NRL clubs to play another premiership match at Hindmarsh Stadium in 2007.

Western Australia's rugby league officials are also attempting to secure a match in Perth next year, in competition with the South Australian bid.

"One thing we have on line next year is an NRL game in Adelaide," Shepherd, who reached New South Wales country junior level as a player, said.

"The AFL has a split round in the middle of the year and we felt that would be a good weekend to have it if it (suited) the NRL club.

"Penrith wants to come back. We're in negotiations with four or five clubs but I can't say who they are yet. But I can tell you for sure that Perth wants a game next year so it becomes pretty competitive."

Melbourne upset Penrith 40-18 on Saturday, when Storm fullback Greg Inglis thrilled the 7017 crowd with three second-half tries to prove skilled athletes are a pleasure to watch in any code.

It was a home fixture for Penrith, which averages about 18,000 at its own stadium - which is being refurbished.

South Australia' Government underwrote the promotional game to ensure Penrith would not be out of pocket.

"I was a tiny bit disappointed with the crowd," Shepherd said.
"I thought we'd get about 10,000.

"But it's Easter and we're up against Oakbank and a lot of people go away for the Easter weekend.

"(The game) had to be in the first 10 rounds and (Department of) Sports and Recreation gave two choices to the NRL - and this was it."

Shepherd said the former Adelaide Rams had averaged 11,500 spectators in the club's two years of existence, which showed there was a market for an NRL club in Adelaide.

NRL chief executive David Gallop has said the body wants to spread nationally, and "grassroots" support had to be established in the traditional AFL states.

No NRL team would be forced to relocate interstate, but some clubs may have to move to survive, Gallop said.

Rising costs and heavy competition in Sydney for corporate sponsorship meant tough times ahead for some clubs.

"Whether that ultimately means they've got to move to ensure their future I'm not sure," he said.

"It's an expensive business. Sydney is highly competitive and we've got a lot of teams in Sydney so the pressures are not going to go away."

There would certainly be a fair degree of resistance (to relocation). But if the option was there then I'm sure they'd look at it if it meant that would mean a sure future."

The Advertiser
Very good result, considering it was Easter, and congratulations to all concerned. =D>

Any South Australians reading, I encourage you to contact your state politicians, and tell them that you want your state tax payers dollars to continue to fund this event....

Don't worry Gimp - I'm sure this won't affect your housing commission subsidy....

Considering in earlier reports they were expecting at least 12,000 for the first NRL game since the Adelaide Rams demise, a tiny bit disappointed doesn't sound right. I'd say they're very disappointed.

Willis, you can't help those who do not wish to be helped, not only have they never had the olympics or the commonwealth games they lost the the grand prix to kennett (I rest my case on that) No great loss, it's only south australia. A state run on churches and dark medievil shit , looks like rugby league ended up in a barrel in a discarded bank

Read this one mate, it is on the RL board at Big Footy & has gotten an interesting amount of replies.

So obviously there was some curiousity about the game. :o

The thread basically spells out my feelings towards rugby league and the people who run the game. By saying that Adelaide is "dangerously AFL obsessed" is a severe cop-out. You promote your code because you want it to grow. Saying that Adelaide is too hard is like saying that you don't think your code is horribly good.

Having said that.............

Carna Swanners!
Carn North Adelaide!
Up the (Newtown) Jets!
