Over the weekend, I read an article that stated that NRL CEO David Smith would be cracking down on the inflated crowd numbers that NRL clubs have been providing to rugby league headquarters.

The act of embellishing attendance numbers at games is nothing new, but apart from the notion of saving face, I’ve always wondered what good it actually does.

Sure, it may allow a club to boast about its crowd figures – or more likely, save the club from an embarrassing number – but it’s the equivalent of telling a first date that you’re extremely wealthy.

Yes, there might be some short-term benefits, but if you’re into it for the long term you’re going to be found out, and you’ll end up being much more embarrassed than if you were just honest in the first place.



in 2012 the NRl had an average of 16423 attendance during its home and away season

Raiderdave doesn't understand what a sell out is, and also he doesn't understand that Etihad Stadium can't sell every available seat to oval sports, because some sections right at the back in the top deck have viewing restrictions. I wonder why SoO couldn't break the all time record crowd for the ground Raiderdave? The superior union holds that title.

Fair point Stewie on the sellout bit. I was more in agreement in terms on RL getting a good crowd in Melbourne, even if most of the people did travel from NSW and Qld to attend.

your 83,250 is a grand final, any other game they bumsnitting struggle to get 20 k to the game,
in 2012 for the home and away season the nrl had an average of 16423k
if you include the finals series, they averaged 17346k
so if the nrl got 82,250 as you claim, how little about of people are turning up to the finals series

as this article states, that the clubs have been inflating its own figures.
looking at the embarrassing figures that the nrl already has & its own CEO admitting they have been fudged.
it only proves how shit your game is & how little interest there is in it
