It is interesting to review this question again. Of course it is speculative however an educated one at that. We will all have different opinions and be influenced by our code preference maybe but let’s try to take the helicopter up so to speak and look at it as objectively as possible.

I’ll start with Rl. I really do think this depends on the nrl getting someone decent and capable to run the game. It will also depend heavily on starting from scratch administratively and getting rid of those vested interests that hold the game back. The clubs, States, and such have to let go and the commission truely needs to be independent. The AFL have a good model and this should be replicated maybe in its fullest. The pitebtuon for Rl and the nrl is massive. That they can do what they do now being so hamstrung only highlights this. If this is sorted soon you will see I believe : expansion into non traditional areas with Perth the top of the heap. I think if done correctly, growth at grassroots will come from these areas. With Aussie rules and soccer expanding it is only natural numbers will decline in traditional areas as parents and kids have more options however if the nrl get their expansion right the same may happen in Perth in reverse. If things administratively don’t change the nrl will be okay. The game will still get a team in Perth however I wonder if they baulk at this due to the heavy financial cost (although is meant to be self funded I doubt it would be successful without some significant and ongoing outlay by the nrl). Soo will still be the juggernaughf it is but it will have to moved outside the season proper (a good future thinking admin would see this) otherwise it will hold back the potential growth that is there.

AFL. Well the AFL will need to consolidate the two new expansion teams. Grassroots in these areas is strong and the AFL has and does a lot of work in this area and has done so long before each AFL was there (note to nrl). Western Sydney is a tough area but it was a fight that needed to be had and AFL are in for a penny and in for a pound. This will be it’s biggest and most important venture as they need a foothold here. Growth in grassroots numbers and teams is encouraging. They will need a third team in Sydney at sometime but it is a long way off. I think we will see the comps split into two ... and finals will Nicol s top teams from each playing off. When this happens a team from Tass is will enter. I would caution the AFL from expanding the AFL Como too much however as it waters down the product. Relocation will be the way to go re tassie. Another team in Perth and Adelaide are also on the cards.
